Interceptions saved the Huskers from greater disaster in 2003

Consider that the Nebraska Cornhuskers ranked first in the nation by a long shot in the number of pass interceptions in 2003 which totalled 29. Even the vaunted Oklahoma defense only had 20. If you wonder how the otherwise mediocre Cornhuskers still managed 9 wins and 3 loses in 2003, there is your answer. Without these interceptions, the Huskers would have looked even far worse than they did. This is surely all thanks to their new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, who is taking over as interim head coach for the fired Solich. Now if they can only get that same competence instilled in all the other positions on the field, the Huskers will once again have great teams. Pelini is from Youngstown, Ohio, just as the Stoops brothers.

NCAA College Basketball Nov. 29, 2003

Duke will not - as otherwise expected - replace UConn in the rankings as the Nr. 1 team in the country, due to their surprise 78-68 loss to Purdue in the finals of the Great Alaska shoothout. Duke, which had looked unimpressive in previous games, continued to look unimpressive and may not be a national title contender this year. Kenneth Lowe scored 22 for the Boilermakers and Chris Booker had 20, so that it looks like they have a team to be reckoned with this year.

16th-ranked Louisville fell 70-69 to Iowa in overtime. Otherwise, all ranked teams won their games, although 6th-ranked Missouri did not look good in beating Oakland (2-4) by only 90-85.

Since Nr. 3 ranked Arizona lost to 8th ranked Florida this week, and Nr. 5 ranked Kansas beat Nr. 4-ranked Michigan State, we expect Kansas to be ranked Nr. 1 in the next NCAA college basketball poll - and it looks at the moment as if they deserve that ranking, with a highly talented new coach and a highly talented team. Since 7th-ranked Syracuse also lost and will drop far in the rankings, and since 6th-ranked Missouri looked unimpressive, 8th ranked Florida, victors over Arizona, will probably move to Nr. 2 in the rankings.

Possible is that Texas, which has looked very good in its games thus far, will move up considerably from its present 11th spot, and look to see Georgia Tech break into or near the top 10.

NCAA College Basketball Nov. 28, 2003

Georgia Tech, which defeated Nr. 1 ranked UConn in the previous game, continued to look very impressive by beating Texas Tech 85-65 in the final of the Preseason NIT tournament. This ought to put the Yellowjackets in the top 10 if not top 5 of the rankings, although they were unranked going into the tournament. With six players in double figures and 18 assists, this looks like a team capable of playing real "team" basketball, and that is always hard to beat.

UConn bounced back from its loss to Georgia Tech to beat Utah 76-44 in the consolation game.

Second-ranked Duke beat Liberty unimpressively 76-47, thus putting the Blue Devils up against Purdue, winners over Seton Hall 75-63, in the final game of the Great Alaska Shootout.

The game of the day was 8th-ranked Florida against 4th-ranked Arizona, in the Tipoff Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, which Florida decided in its favor 78-77 as Matt Walsh scored 27 points including 5 of 8 three-pointers. Long range made the difference in the game as Florida netted 8-20 attempts whereas Arizona was only 5 of 21 from beyond the circle. Florida's quickness also made a difference as the Gators stole the ball 13 times, as opposed to only 7 steals for the Wildcats. But the game could easily have gone either way. These are both clearly class teams who will win a lot of games this season.

The Gators are not the only good team out of Florida, as Florida State beat South Carolina State 81-46. Tim Pickett had 17 points for Florida and Thurman Zimmerman 25 for S. Carolina State. The Seminoles are off to their best start in the last seven seasons and continue to be one of our favorites to crack into the top 20 rankings soon.

10th-ranked Kentucky trounced Tennessee Tech 108-81 with all five starters in double figures and Gerald Fitch scoring 36 points on a 14-20 shooting night, with 5 of 11 from 3-point range, meaning he was 9 of 9 within the circle.

College Football Predictions - Thanksgiving weekend of November 27-29, 2003 - RESULTS

The major news for Husker fans - prior to giving my prediction results - is that Solich is out as head football coach at Nebraska. It is a great day for Husker football. As an NU alumnus I can say it is one year too late, but better late than never. I give more reasons for my opinion below in my comment about the Huskers lucky win over the Buffaloes - who as the Colorado coach stated - could indeed also have won the game except for two late NU interceptions. During Solich's tenure, Nebraska has dropped from being an absolute football powerhouse for thirty years to being a team of mediocre proportions, in recent years plagued by disciplinary problems, poor recruiting and no longer able to compete with the best teams in college football. It was high time for a change.

Here are the RESULTS of our College Football Predictions
for the Thanksgiving Weekend Nov. 27-29, 2003

We knew this would be a tough week to call with many traditional rivalries making prognostication difficult so we thought the scores would be close, but in fact, most winning teams beat the spread margin soundly, so that our conservative calls were generally not rewarded this week - as has been the case most of this season - we have done so badly against the spread by being too conservative. We went only 18-10 in calling the winners of the games this week, thus raising our cumulative record to 284-105 in calling winners, but struggled against the spread going an absolutle poor 8-19-1, putting our cumulative record against the spread at 182-201-6, so that our chances of breaking .500 here are disappearing fast and we will have to rely on the bowl games to get to .500, but it will be next to impossible.

Below:
W =win=means we called the game winner correctly
L =loss=means we did not call the game winner correctly
+ means we beat the spread
- means we did not beat the spread
o - means the spread was equalized or there was no spread listed

W- Arizona St. was favored by 15.5 over Arizona. We called it Arizona State 31 Arizona 17 thinking that intrastate rivalries always bring out the best in competition and keep the games close. Nevertheless, the Sun Devils beat the Wildcats by more, 28-7.

W- Boise St. was favored by 22 over Nevada. We thought Ryan Dinwiddie would pass for records, but Nevada would score and have a pesky secondary. We called it Boise State 48 Nevada 28. Ryan Dinwiddie was his usual splendid passing self as Boise State rolled to a 49-0 lead in the 3rd quarter, leading 42-0 at the half, and ultimately winning 56-3 without scoring in the 4th quarter as the reserves were allowed to play. This is simply a great team that could beat any team in the top 10 on a day where Dinwiddie was in form.

Wo Bowling Green was favored by 8 over Toledo. This was predicted to be a tough game. We called it Bowling Green 31 Toledo 24 and the final score was 31-23, with the foolish Toledo coach going for 2 with 2 minutes 39 to play, rather than taking the point and going from there. It is tough to call the score that close and not beat the spread because of stupid coaching. But that may be why Bowling Green won and Toledo lost.

W- Miami of Ohio was favored by 24.5 over Central Florida. We called it Miami of Ohio 42 Central Florida 21. The RedHawks scored two TDs more than that as Miami of Ohio won over UCF 56-21.

Lo Louisville was favored by 3 over Cincinnati. We called it for Cincinnati 28-24. We were not that far wrong, but Louisville won 43-40 on a 54-yard touchdown pass with only a minute left to play.

L- Nebraska was favored on the road by 3 over Colorado. We called it for the home team Colorado 14-13. In spite of Nebraska's very lucky win 31-22 win over the Buffaloes, Solich is gone. Interceptions by the defense kept the Huskers from losing this one. Although this season has not been the total disaster that the Huskers had in 2002, this improvement seems to be thanks to Pellini, the new defensive coordinator. Solich won this year against weak teams, but did not won the big important games against good teams and when he does lose, he does not have the ability to stay in the game but almost always gets blown out by big margins, in our opinion, this always being a sign of poor coaching. Unless the Huskers wanted to continue their drop into mediocrity - as former Nebraska US Senator Roman Hruska once was quoted as saying "what's wrong with mediocrity?" - a philosophy we do not share, the Huskers had no choice but to take Solich out. See the vote at http://www.firefranksolich.com where at the date of this writing, 56% were for firing Solich - quick. New athletic director Pederson is a winner, so I predicted this move. NU now has to upgrade a non-existent offense in 2004 with a recruiting program that seems to have been run into the ground under Solich's direction. The problems at NU are massive and it will probably take a couple of good recruiting years to get the Husker football program on track again. But now at least we have something positive, optimistic to look forward to.

W- Southern Mississippi was favored by 14.5 over Eastern Carolina. We expected a letdown after the win over TCU, and called it for Southern Miss, but not by a large margin, 31-21. Southern Miss won 38-21.

L- Florida St. was favored by 1 over Florida. Florida had lost only 3 close games to Miami of Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi and had wins over LSU and Georgia, ranked 3 and 5. Florida State had lost to Miami of Florida and Clemson and had no wins to rank with Florida. We thought the Seminoles would be beaten 31-24 but they pulled the game out at the end 38-34.

W+ Georgia was favored by 8 over Georgia Tech. We called it Georgia 31 Georgia Tech 21. Final score 34-17 for Georgia.

L- Alabama was favored on the road by 3 over Hawaii. We called it Alabama 37 Hawaii 27 but the Crimson Tide were hula-hula'd and lost by 37-29.

L- Houston was favored by 1.5 over UAB. We called it UAB 41 Houston 27. Houston rolled 56-28.

W- Tennessee was favored by 10 over Kentucky who is tough at home. We called it for the Vols 34-27. Tennessee had a real struggle with Kentucky, trailing 7-3 at the half before winning 20-7.

W- LSU was favored by 9.5 over Arkansas. This looked like a game of defenses so we thought it would be close. We called it LSU 21 Arkansas 17. Well we were surely wrong on the defenses, as LSU crushed the Razorbacks 55-24. Who will LSU face in the SEC title game? This is a tough one since Florida, Georgia and Tennessee all have identical records in the East. Not only that but Florida beat Georgia, Georgia beat Tennessee and Tennessee beat Florida. For the formula to be used, which depends on BCS ranking, see The NewsStar.com.

L- Louisiana Tech was favored by 7.5 over Rice. We called it Louisiana Tech 31 Rice 21 but Rice not only upset but trounced Louisiana Tech 49-14.

W+ Marshall was favored by 17.5 over Ohio. We called it Marshall 41 Ohio 21. Marshall won 28-0.

L+ Memphis was favored by 10.5 over South Florida. We called it Memphis 28 South Florida 24 and Memphis lost 21-16.

W- Mississippi was favored by 19 over Mississippi State. We called it 44-30 but Mississippi shut out Mississippi State in their coach Sherrill's last game, 31-0.

W+ Missouri was favored by 26 over Iowa State. They Cyclones had been hapless against everyone. We called it Missouri 47 Iowa State 17. The final score was Mizzou 45 Iowa State 7.

-- North Texas was favored by 8 over New Mexico State but won 13-10 before we had our predictions up. It was closer than expected, which we think may apply to this entire weekend.

W+ Miami of Florida was favored by 3.5 over Pittsburgh. Pitt had been weak against the rush, so we thought Miami would win easily and called it 38-17, as the final score was 28-14.

L- Syracuse was favored by 5.5 over Rutgers. Rutgers appears to have no chance of winning. We called it for Syracuse 33-18. How wrong we were as Rutgers wins in an upset, thrashing the Orangemen 24-7. Hard to believe.

W- TCU was favored by 24 over SMU. We thought the The Horned Frogs would try to make amends for their loss last week to Southern Miss. We called it TCU 47 SMU 17. TCU had a tough time with winless SMU winning only 20-13.

L- Notre Dame was favored by 3.5 over Stanford. Stanford had not had a good year but we thought they could win here. We called it for our alma mater 28-26, but the Irish clobbered Stanford 57-7. Stanford has had a disastrous season and should be on the lookout for a new football coach. As a Stanford alum, it is my opinion that there is no excuse for such losses, especially given the quality players that Stanford is able to recruit. But if you have the wrong coach, forget it.

W+ Texas was favored by 20 over Texas A&M. We called it for the Longhorns 51-28 who won 46-15.

W- Fresno St. was favored by 20.5 over UTEP. UTEP has been losing by an average of about 30. We called it for Fresno State 50-20 but they barely eked out the win 23-20.

L- Virginia was favored by 1 over Virginia Tech. The Hokies had been weak on the road, but not that weak. We called it for the Hokies 28-17 b ut Virginia rolled 35-21.

W+ Maryland was favored by 7 over Wake Forest. Maryland surprised last week and Wake Forest had played worse as the season progresses. We called it Maryland 41 Wake Forest 14. Maryland trailed 21- 6 came on to win 41-28.

W- West Virginia was favored by 21 over Temple. West Virginia had been strong to close out the season. We called it West Virginia 38 Temple 10. West Virginia won but only 45-28.

W+ Wyoming was favored by 1 over UNLV. We called it UNLV 27 Wyoming 17. After trailing 24-10 at the half, UNLV won 35-24 with 25 unanswered points in the second half. That is always a sign of good coaching by one team and worse coaching by the other team.

Krzyzewski passes Wooden in Basketball Career Wins

The second-ranked Blue Devils, who will likely be the next Nr. 1 ranked team due to a loss by Connecticut, beat Pacific 82-69 as Luol Deng and Daniel Ewing each scored 20 points, with Deng taking 10 rebounds off the boards.

It was a significant record game for Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski who passed former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden in career wins.

NCAA College Basketball Nov. 26, 2003

Georgia Tech beat Connecticut in the finals of the Preseason NIT tournament 77-61 to confirm our already posted view that Connecticut's spot as the Number 1 team in the nation would be shortlived. See the article by AP sports writer Hal Bock at Yahoo! Sports. Texas Tech beat Utah 65-54 in the other semifinal game and look to be good this year.

As expected by many, due to the loss of superstar Carmelo Anthony from last season's NCAA national champions, Syracuse is not the same team by a longshot this year as the seventh-ranked Orangemen lost 96-92 to Charlotte.

The unranked Florida State Seminoles beat Nicholls State 99-54 and they look like a team who might break into the top 25 soon. The made 13 of 31 3-point attempts and with that kind of shooting from that distance, they can beat anyone, anytime.

From Nov. 25 - the 8th-ranked Florida Gators demolished Montana State 112-73 and play 4th-ranked Arizona on Friday in a game which will show just how good these teams may be this year.

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

NCAA Men's College Basketball - Kansas beats Michigan State Nov. 25, 2003

Kansas, Nr. 6 ranked, who we think has a good chance to win the NCAA championship this year, beat Nr. 3 ranked Michigan State 81-74.

College Football Predictions - Thanksgiving weekend of November 27-29, 2003

Although we are far into the season, this is one of the toughest weeks in 2003 to call because of unpredictable combinations of traditional rivalries, home field advantage, coaching issues, etc., i.e. there are many variables which salt the prediction equation with uncertainty. Hence, when push comes to shove, we are calling the games close this week.

Arizona St. is favored by 15.5 over Arizona. We call it Arizona State 31 Arizona 17 thinking that intrastate rivalries always bring out the best in competition and keep the games close.

Boise St. is favored by 22 over Nevada. Ryan Dinwiddie may pass for records, but Nevada will score and has a pesky secondary. We call it Boise State 48 Nevada 28.

Bowling Green is favored by 8 over Toledo. This may be a tough game. We call it Bowling Green 31 Toledo 24.

Miami of Ohio is favored by 24.5 over Central Florida. Miami is surely better than that point spread if the first team stays on the field, but last week they put the reserves in very early, allowing Ohio to score 3 unanswered touchdowns to ruin the spread. So what now? If Miami gets a big lead, they may do the same again. Besides, Central Florida has not lost at home this year. We call it Miami of Ohio 42 Central Florida 21.

Louisville is favored by 3 over Cincinnati. We will go with the home team and call if for Cincinnati 28-24.

Nebraska is favored on the road by 3 over Colorado, but the Buffaloes always play well in the thin air against the Huskers. We call it for the home team Colorado 14-13 and hope thereby "Goodbye Solich".

Southern Mississippi is favored by 14.5 over Eastern Carolina. We expect a letdown after the win over TCU, and call it for Southern Miss, but not by a large margin, 31-21.

Florida St. is favored by 1 over Florida. Florida has lost only 3 close games to Miami of Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi and has wins over LSU and Georgia, ranked 3 and 5. Florida State lost to Miami of Florida and Clemson and has no wins to rank with Florida. We think the Seminoles will be beaten 31-24.

Georgia is favored by 8 over Georgia Tech. We call it Georgia 31 Georgia Tech 21.

Alabama is favored on the road by 3 over Hawaii. We call it Alabama 37 Hawaii 27.

Houston is favored by 1.5 over UAB. We call it UAB 41 Houston 27.

Tennessee is favored by 10 over Kentucky who is tough at home. We call it for the Vols 34-27.

LSU is favored by 9.5 over Arkansas. This looks to me like a game of defenses so it could be close. We call it LSU 21 Arkansas 17.

Louisiana Tech is favored by 7.5 over Rice. We call it Louisiana Tech 31 Rice 21.

Marshall is favored by 17.5 over Ohio. We call it Marshall 41 Ohio 21.

Memphis is favored by 10.5 over South Florida. We call it Memphis 28 South Florida 24.

Mississippi is favored by 19 over Mississippi State. We call it 44-30.

Missouri is favored by 26 over Iowa State. They Cyclones have been hapless against everyone. We call it Missouri 47 Iowa State 17.

North Texas was favored by 8 over New Mexico State but won 13-10 before we had our predictions up. It was closer than expected, which we think may apply to this entire weekend.

Miami (Fla.) is favored by 3.5 over Pittsburgh. Pitt is weak against the rush, so Miami should win. We call it 38-17.

Syracuse is favored by 5.5 over Rutgers. Rutgers appears to have no chance of winning. We call it for Syracuse 33-18.
TCU is favored by 24 over SMU. The Horned Frogs will try to make amends for their loss. We call it TCU 47 SMU 17.
Notre Dame is favored by 3.5 over Stanford. Stanford has not had a good year but could win here. We call it for our alma mater 28-26.

Texas is favored by 20 over Texas A&M. We call it for the Longhorns 51-28.

Fresno St. is favored by 20.5 over UTEP. UTEP has been losing by an average of about 30. We call it for Fresno State 50-20.

Virginia is favored by 1 over Virginia Tech. The Hokies have been weak on the road, but not this weak. We call it for the Hokies 28-17.

Maryland is favored by 7 over Wake Forest. Maryland surprised last week and Wake Forest has played worse as the season progresses. We call it Maryland 41 Wake Forest 14.

West Virginia is favored by 21 over Temple. West Virginia has been strong to close out the season. We call it West Virginia 38 Temple 10.

UNLV - no line (even) vs. Wyoming. We call it UNLV 27 Wyoming 17.

ESPN.com - NCF - Report: Huskers may force Solich out as coach

If true, the following report may be the best news that Husker alumni such as myself have heard frrom Huskerland in the last several years.

ESPN.com - NCF - Report: Huskers may force Solich out as coach

Recall, Pederson was brought in from Pittsburgh as the new Athletic Director just last year - and at Pittsburgh Pederson was known as a winner, who brought in top-notch winning coaches and turned the Pittsburgh sports programs around.

After two extremely disappointing NU football years, with lopsided losses the kind of which NU had not seen in the thirty years previous, with records being broken for losses of all kinds and descriptions, with one of the country's greatest football traditions and programs slowly but surely going down the tubes, will it finally be "Goodbye Solich"? We certainly hope so.

NCAA Men's College Basketball - Top 25 - games of 21 and 22 November, 2003

The 21st and 22nd of November marked the first relatively full day of NCAA college basketball games and everything went according to plan, as ALL of the teams ranked in the top 25 who played won their games. (Rank in parentheses and won-loss record after this game in parentheses).

(1) Connecticut (3-0) beat Sacred Heart 111-64 - Gordon scored 27 for UConn as Okafor had 10 rebounds and Williams 13 assists.

(10) North Carolina (1-0) beat Old Dominion 90-64 as McCants scored 18.

NCAA Men's College Basketball Season 2003-2004.

Recent games of interest

Nov. 17 - P.J. Tucker scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds in his first game for the 11th-ranked Texas Longhorns, who beat Brown impressively 89-51. Brown is no weak team, having gone 17-12 last year, so Texas looks good. By comparison, Connecticut beat Yale only 70-60, and Yale was 14-13 last year, behind Brown in the Ivy League.

Nov. 19 - Number One ranked Connecticut vs. Nevada, Preseason NIT
Ben Gordon scored 37 points, the highest scoring output of his career, as the top-ranked Connecticut Huskies won a 93-79 victory over Nevada Wolf Pack after leading by 43-37 at the half. UConn coach Jim Calhoun said that Nevada has a very good team, but after the poor showing against Yale in their first game, we are still doubtful that this team can hold on to the number one ranking.

College Football Predictions - Nov. 20, 21 and weekend of November 22, 2003 - RESULTS

Here are the RESULTS of our College Football Predictions
for Nov. 20 and 21 and for the weekend of November 22, 2003

We finally had a good week again calling the games. We went an exceptional 40-9 in calling the winners of the games this week, thus raising our record to 266-95 in calling winners, and also had an exceptional week against the spread going 32-17, putting our cumulative record against the spread at 174-182-5, so we still have a chance to break .500 going into the final weeks of the college football season.

Here are the results of the games this week.

Below:
W =win=means we called the game winner correctly
L =loss=means we did not call the game winner correctly
+ means we beat the spread
- means we did not beat the spread
o - means the spread was equalized or there was no spread listed

W- Arkansas was favored by 27.5 over Mississippi State. We called it Arkansas 37 Mississippi State 18 but the Razorbacks ran wild 52-6.

W- Middle Tennessee State was favored by 6 over Arkansas State. We called it Middle Tennessee State 28 Arkansas State 27 and Middle Tennessee State won 24-14. These are the kinds of spreads one hates to lose, as it was closer than the score indicates. Arkansas State led at the half and the larger margin of victory came only through a TD late in the game.

W+ Auburn was favored by 8 over Alabama. We called it Auburn 28 Alabama 24. We were close as Auburn won 28-23.

W- Utah was favored by 7.5 over BYU. We called it Utah 38 BYU 24. Utah struggled to win 3-0.

W+ Bowling Green was favored by 14.5 over Ball State. We called it Bowling Green 37 Ball State 17 and Bowling Green won 41-14.

W+ Oklahoma State was favored by 27 over Baylor. We called it Oklahoma State 38 Baylor 13 and Cowboys won 38-21.

W+ Marshall was favored by 12 over Central Florida . We called it Marshall 37 Central Florida 22. and Marshall won 21-7. Marshall dominated the game, allowing Central Florida only 6 first downs, but themselves had trouble scoring. Half of Central Florida's only 111 yards rushing (and only 59 passing) came on a 55-yard TD run, their only score.

W+ Boise St. was favored by 8 over Fresno State. We called it Boise State 47 Fresno State 35 and Boise State won 31-17, even though Ryan Dinwiddie threw for less yardage than normally, but he was 22 of 31 for 273 yards with 2 TD passes, one for 73 yards.

W- Georgia was favored by 18.5 over Kentucky. We called it Georgia 31 Kentucky 21. Georgia won 30-10.

W+ Hawaii was favored by 26.5 over Army. We called it Hawaii 31 Army 14 and Hawaii did a hula-hula winning 59-28.

L- Utah State was favored by 2 over Idaho. We called Utah State 24 Idaho 17. Idaho won in a mild upset 20-13.

W+ Northwestern was favored by 3.5 over Illinois. We called it Northwestern 27 Illinois 20 and Illinois lost 37-20.

W+ Purdue was favored by 24.5 over Indiana. We called it Purdue 31 Indiana 7. Purdue won by only 24-16.

W+ Kansas was favored by 10.6 over Iowa State. We called it Kansas 31 Iowas State 24 but the Jayhawks had no trouble with the Cyclones 36-7.

W+ Kansas State was favored by 14.5 over Missouri. We called it Kansas State 31 Missouri 21 and the Wildcats won by that 10-point margin 24-14.

W- Kent State was favored by 12.5 over Buffalo. We called it Kent State 37 Buffalo 13. Kent State won 34-24.

W+ Louisville was favored by 11.5 over Houston. We called it Louisville 27 Houston 14. Louisville won 66-45.

W- Memphis was favored by 10.5 over Cincinnati. We called it Memphis 37 Cincinnati 13. Memphis won 21-16.

W- Miami of Florida was favored by 26.5 over Rutgers. We called it Miami of Florida 48 Rutgers 10 but they fell short 34-10.

W+ Michigan was favored by 6.5 over Ohio State. We called it Michigan 28 Ohio State 21. Michigan won 35-21 ending any hopes that the Buckeyes could repeat as national NCAA football champions.

W+ Michigan State was favored by 5 over Penn State. We called it Michigan State 28 Penn State 24 and the Spartans destroyed the hapless Nittany Lions 41-10.

L+ LSU was favored by 6.5 over Mississippi. We called it Mississippi 30 LSU 27. LSU managed, barely, 17-14.

L- North Carolina State was favored by 1 over Maryland. We called it North Carolina State 35 Maryland 28. Maryland won 26-24.

W- Navy was favored by 19 over Central Michigan. We called it Navy 34 Central Michigan 20 as Navy won 63-34.

L- North Carolina was favored by 6.5 over Duke. We called it North Carolina 21 Duke 14. Duke won 30-22.

W+ Northern Illinois was favored by 29 over Eastern Michigan. We called it Northern Illinois 52 Eastern Michigan 14. Northern Illinois had more trouble than expected, winning 38-24.

W- Miami (Ohio) was favored by 24 over Ohio. We called it Miami of Ohio 48 Ohio 7. After leading 49-10 at the end of the 3rd quarter, Miami put their ineffective reserves into the game in the 4th quarter, who promptly allowed three touchdowns, making the final score a non-representative 49-31. This is the kind of spread that is tough to lose since Miami of Ohio is easily 4 touchdowns better than Ohio, but not with the reserves playing. This is probably the difference between the truly top teams and teams like Miami of Ohio who simply lack depth beyond their starting players. In any case, this game shows the risks of betting any real money on college football games by point spreads. You can easily get burned, even if your analysis of the teams is correct.

L- Oregon was favored by 1.5 over Oregon St. We called it Oregon State 35 Oregon 24. Oregon won 34-20.

W- Rice was favored by 14.5 over UTEP. We called it Rice 28 UTEP 14. Rice won 45-14.

W+ Air Force was favored by 4 over San Diego State. We called it San Diego State 31 Air Force 21 and San Diego State won 24-3.

W- Tulsa was favored by 8 over San Jose State. We called it Tulsa 41 San Jose State 18. Tulsa won 34-32.

W+ South Carolina was favored by 1.5 over Clemson. We called it Clemson 36 South Carolina 31. Clemson ran wild winning 63-17.

W+ South Florida was favored by 6.5 over UAB. We called it UAB 24 South Florida 17and UAB won 22-19.

W+ TCU was favored by 2.5 over Southern Mississippi. We called it Southern Miss 37 TCU 27 (Thursday, Nov. 20) thinking that TCU was over-rated due to its very weak schedule. Still to the credit of the Horned Frogs, after being down 31-6 after the 3rd quarter, they scored 3 TD's in a row in the middle of the fourth quarter to make it close 31-28 before Southern Miss made another field goal and TD on a fumble recovery to win 40-28. We also gained a tremendous amount of respect for TCU coach Gary Patterson for calling and then recovering two onside kicks to catch up in the middle of the fourth quarter. Here is a man who plays to win - well done (!), even though, in this case, they fell just short. In the end, for this kind of gutsy play, I was nearly rooting for the Frogs.

W+ California was favored by 9 over Stanford. We called it Cal 35 Stanford 16. Cal won 28-16, but only after trailing 10-0 at the half.

W+ West Virginia was favored by 2 over Syracuse. We called it West Virginia 27 Syracuse 17 and the Mountaineers, after a tough start, won 34-23.

W+ Pittsburgh was favored by 15 over Temple. We called it Pitt 31 Temple 17. The final score was 30-16.

W+ Tennessee was favored by 21 over Vanderbilt. We called it Tennessee 41 Vanderbilt 6 and the Vols rolled 48-0.

W+ Oklahoma was favored by 19 over Texas Tach. We called it Oklahoma 56 Texas Tech 21 and Oklahoma won 56-25.

W+ Toledo was favored by 12.5 over Western Michigan. We called it Toledo 37 Western Michigan 14 and Toledo won 34-17.

W+ Troy St. was favored by 14.5 over Louisiana-Monroe. We called it Troy State 31 Louisiana-Monroe 17 and won 28-24.

W+ Tulane was favored by 9.5 over East Carolina. We called it Tulane 27 East Carolina 14. Tulane won 28-18.

L+ Colorado St. was favored by 6.5 over UNLV. We called it UNLV 24 Colorado State 21 but Colorado State pulled it out in a squeaker 24-23.

W+ USC was favored by 22 over UCLA. We called it USC 48 UCLA 24. USC led 47-9 after three quarters and then let UCLA score 13 unanswered points in the 4th quarter for a final score of 47-22.

W+ Virginia was favored by 6.5 over Georgia Tech. We called it Virginia 27 Georgia Tech 20 and they won 29-17.

L+ Virginia Tech was favored over Boston College by 15 We called it 31-17 for the Hokies, but Boston College wins in an upset 34-27.

L- Washington State was favored by 6.5 over Washington. We called it Washington State 42 Washington 28 but Washington managed the upset win 27-19.

L- Wisconsin was favored by 2 over Iowa. We called it Wisconsin 35 Iowa 31. Wisconsin lost 27-21.

W+ New Mexico was favored by 6 over Wyoming. We called it New Mexico 31 Wyoming 17 and they won 26-3.

NCAA Men's College Basketball Season 2003-2004. First games of the season.

The polls have the Connecticut Huskies on top to start the season, but the Huskies got off to an unimpressive start, trailing Yale by 3 points at the half, before winning 70-60.

We do not expect Connecticut to maintain their ranking and look for any of the following teams to move to the top in the early weeks of the season: Michigan State, Duke, Texas, Kansas, Kentucky, or Arizona.

College Football Predictions, Nov. 12 and weekend of November 15, 2003 - RESULTS

Here are our College Football Prediction Results for the weekend of November 15, 2003. The real question was the Oklahoma-Baylor game. The Sooners had beaten Texas A&M 77-0, a team that beat Baylor 73-10, making the Okies 140-point favorites by comparative scores. The sky was the limit. We prognosticated 66-0 but were certain that this prediction was risky since the Sooners would probably either use reserves early or simply lose interest, which was the case, as OU won by ONLY 41-3, after leading 34-3 at the half.

We went 40-14 in calling the winners of the games, raising our record to 226-86 in calling winners, but we fared disastrously against the spread going an incredibly bad 21-32-1, with our record against the spread going to a very poor 142-165-5. Next week is decisive for an improvement, as the last two weeks have been difficult.

Here then are the results of the remaining games this week.

W =win=means we called the game winner correctly
L =loss=means we did not call the game winner correctly
+ means we beat the spread
- means we did not beat the spread
o - means the spread was equalized or there was no spread listed

W+ Akron was favored by 10 over Ohio. We called it Akron 26 Ohio 19 and one TD difference was enough. Akron won by 35-28.

W+ LSU was favored by 6.5 over Alabama. We called it LSU 27 Alabama 20 as the Crimson Tide was subdued 27-3.

W- USC was favored by 29 over Arizona. We called it USC 42 Arizona 14. Arizona was improving and we thought that USC might take this one too lightly, but we were wrong as the Trojans shut out Arizona 45-0.

W- Arkansas was favored by 29.5 points over New Mexico State. We called it for the Razorbacks 43-14 who won 48-20.

W- Houston was favored by 10.5 over Army. Houston has had some disastrous games. We called it Houston 31 Army 27. Final score Houston 34- Army 14.

W- Boise St. was favored by 40 over UTEP. How many TD passes will Ryan Dinwiddie throw? UTEP has no pass defense to speak of. We called it for Boise State 69-24. Boise State led 38-7 at the half and cruised to a 51-21 win, with reserves playing toward the end of the game, which keeps the score down and can make beating the spread difficult.

W+ Bowling Green was favored by 20 over Kent State. Bowling Green was in the top 25 BCS where it belongs. Kent State put 30 points on the scoreboard against Miami of Ohio and have good offense, so this could be an offensive showdown. We called it for Bowling Green but not by 20. Bowling Green 34 Kent State 24 with the actual final score 42-33.

W+ California was favored by 6 over visiting Washington. We think Cal can beat the spread and see Cal winning 28-21 and in fact Cal destroyed Washington 54-7.

W- Clemson was favored by 14 over Duke. Clemson will be high on its win over Florida State but Duke inspired through a win over Georgia Tech last week. We think it will be close. Clemson 20 Duke 14. The win over the Seminoles was apparently no fluke as Clemson has no trouble with the Blue Devils, 40-7.

L- Colorado State was favored by 13 over San Diego State. We thought San Diego State might beat Colorado State 10-7, but they in fact lost 21-6.

L- Ball State was favored by 10 over Eastern Michigan, the home team. Our called was Ball State 26 Eastern Michigan 21. The home team has no trouble here, as Eastern Michigan wins 38-14.

W- Florida State was favored by 14.5 over North Carolina State. After losing last week, the Seminoles have something to prove against a weak North Carolina State defense. We called it Florida State 55 North Carolina State 38 and it was in fact an offensive donnybrook, as the Seminoles won in overtime 50-44.

W+ Fresno St. was favored by 14.5 over San Jose State, which won handily last week. Our call was Fresno State 48 San Jose State 27 and they won 41-7.

W- Georgia was favored by 7 over Auburn. A tough called. We called it Georgia 28 Auburn 24 and Georgia won 26-7.

W+ Georgia Tech was favored by 10.5 over North Carolina. We called it Georgia Tech 27 North Carolina 14 and the Yellowjackets won 41-24 with a 24-point 4th quarter.

W- Iowa was favored by 5.5 over Minnesota. We called it Iowa 21 Minnesota 20 and the Hawkeyes won over the Gophers 40-22 even though Minnesota piles up 563 total yards, as 4 lost fumbles and 1 interception turned these into naught.

W+ Colorado was favored by 8 over Iowa State. We called it Colorado 26 Iowa State 13 as the Buffaloes won 44-10.

W+ Idaho was favored by 1.5 over Louisiana-Monroe. We called it Idaho 31 Louisiana-Monroe 16 and they won 58-20.

W+ Louisville was favored by 7 over Memphis. We called it Memphis 35 Louisville 17. Memphis has really looked good recently and crushed Louisville 37-7.

L- Maryland was favored by 6 over Virginia (Nov. 13). We called it Virginia 26 Maryland 24. Maryland won 27-17. I was surprised by this one since I thought Virginia would give the Terps a bigger struggle, but after falling behind 24-7 at the half, they could not catch up.

W- Miami (Fla.) was favored by 20 over Syracuse. We called it Miami of Florida 48 Syracuse 14 but the Hurricanes had their hands full and were down 10-7 after the third quarter, rallying to win 17-10. Not impressive.

W+ Miami (Ohio) was favored by 13 over Marshall (Nov. 12). We called it Miami of Ohio 40 Marshall 24. Our faith in this very strong Miami of Ohio team was confirmed as the Redhawks won in a blowout 45-6.

L- Middle Tennessee State was favored by 13.5 over Louisiana-Lafayette. We see Middle Tennessee State winning 38-7, but Lafayette surprised greatly winning 57-51 in overtime.

W+ Missouri was favored by 13.5 over Texas A&M. We called it Mizzou 46 Texas A&M 23. Final score for Mizzou 45-22.

L- The opening line was 0 and Kansas St. was favored by 1 over Nebraska at the time we called the game (by Friday the Huskers were already 2.5 point underdogs). We thought it would be hard to beat the Huskers at home, where they have not lost all year, so it seemed unlikely that the Wildcats would beat them. NU has a team which seemed to consist of a good defense and a mediocre offense. We called it NU 24 Kansas State 13, but after the game being tied 7 to 7 at the half, K-State won going away 38-9, even though the NU defense made 3 total interceptions. So we can call the NU defense mediocre as well as K-State still piled up 563 yards offense. When a team is outscored like that in the second half, it is always poor coaching. When Nebraska loses under Solich, it is almost always a blowout - why is that? It happens because the good coach of an opposing team has made the proper adjustments and the Husker coach has not. Can we as fans finally hope, due to this loss? The words "Goodbye, Solich" would be what we want to hear from the University of Nebraska administration - words which should already have been heard at the end of last year. For each season that Solich remains coach, one new humiliation follows the previous one - and one negative record after another goes into the record books. It is time for a change. A great football tradition is being ruined because the wrong man has the head coaching job for the Cornhuskers. It is high time that the people at NU who decide these things finally recognize that the head Husker coaching job is not welfare employment - either you win, or you are out. That may be tough, but that is life everywhere. Solich is in over his head. Imagine this, that the poor Nebraska coaches were even "angry" that K-State kept their best players in the game against "weak" NU reserves late in the game - what a namby pamby crew Huskerland has become, whining that some other team had run up the score upon the once mighty Huskers. As long as Solich remains coach, this kind of a thing will not be a seldom occurrence and the longer he remains coach, the worse Husker football will be.

W+ Hawaii was favored by 3 over Nevada. We called it for the home team Nevada 38-34 which won 24-14.

W- New Mexico was favored by 4.5 over Air Force. We called it New Mexico 17 Air Force 14, but they won by a TD more, 24-14.

W+ North Texas was favored by 19.5 over Arkansas State. We called it North Texas 39 Arkansas State 13 and the final score for North Texas was 58-14.

W- Michigan was favored by 18.5 over Northwestern, the home team. We called it for the Wolverines 17-14, but they unexpectedly thrashed northwestern 41-10.

L- Notre Dame was favored by 8 over BYU. We called it BYU 31 Notre Dame 28 but the Irish win 33-14.

Wo Ohio St. was favored by 3 over Purdue. We called it Ohio State 24 Purdue 17. The Buckeyes won in overtime 16-13.

W- Oklahoma was favored by 53 over Baylor. Texas A&M beat Baylor 73-10 and then lost to Oklahoma 77-0 so that the Okies are 140-point favorites by comparative score. It just depends on when the reserves are put into the game. We called it Oklahoma 66 Baylor 0. The final score was 41-3.

W- Oklahoma St. was favored by 20.5 over Kansas. We called it Oklahoma State 37 Kansas 27. The Cowboys downed the Jayhawks 44-21.

W- Oregon State was favored by 14 over Stanford. Stanford surprised last week but the Beavers are strong at home. We will have to called this one against the Cardinals, 37-27. The Cardinals had no chance as Oregon stomped them 43-3.

W- Penn St. was favored by 19 over Indiana. It had been a tough season for the Nittany Lions, and we thought they would only win here by about one TD, 21-13, but they finally rolled, winning 52-7.

W+ Boston College was favored by 7.5 over Rutgers. Our called was BC 31 Rutgers 21. BC won 35-25.

W- Rice was favored by 6 over SMU. We saw Rice winning 27-24. They were better than that as Rice won 41-20.

L+ Florida was favored by 7 over South Carolina. The Gators are unstable and could lose. We called it for the Gamecocks 31-30. Florida barely won 24-22, but we beat the spread.

W+ Southern Mississippi was favored by 17 over Tulane. We called it Southern Miss 27 Tulane 16 and they win 28-14.

L- TCU was favored by 6.5 over Cincinnati. Cincinnati beat West Virginia and barely lost to Miami of Ohio and we think they will give TCU problems. TCU surely has a fine time, indeed they are still undefeated but they have beaten no quality team this year. If they do not fall at home against Cincinnati, they may next week on the road against Southern Miss. We think Cincinnati will win and called it Cincinnati 28 TCU 24. To our great surprise, TCU crushed Cincinnati 43-10, indicating that they may indeed have a good football team.

W- Virginia Tech was favored by 25.5 over Temple. We called it for the Hokies 49-17 who barely won in overtime 24-23.

W- Tennessee was favored by 23 over Mississippi State. The Volunteers are on a roll after their win over Miami of Florida. We called it Tennessee 28 Mississippi State 10, but the Volunteers thumped Mississippi State 59-21, leading 52-7 after 3 quarters.

W- Texas was favored by 15.5 over Texas Tech. We called it Texas 49 Texas Tech 28. Texas won quite luckily in the last minute 43-40 after having fallen behind 40-35 with only two minutes to play.

L- Northern Illinois was favored by 2.5 over Toledo. We called it Northern Illinois 28 Toledo 17 and Toledo won in an upset 49-30.

W+ Tulsa - the line was zero - vs. Louisiana Tech. We called it Tulsa 24 Louisiana Tech 20. Tulsa won 48-18.

L- UCLA was favored by 2 over Oregon. The Bruins are strong at home. We called it UCLA 24 Oregon 17. So much for UCLA as Oregon led at the half 31-6 and won 31-13.

W+ Utah was favored by 12.5 over Wyoming. We called it Utah 35 Wyoming 21. Under their new coach this season, Utah is getting better and better and will probably be a great team in coming years.

L- Utah State was favored by 6.5 over Troy State. We called it Utah State 21 Troy State 14. Troy State won 23-14.

L- Kentucky was favored by 6.5 over Vanderbilt. We called it Kentucky 28 Vanderbilt 21. The final score, quite an upset in my books, was a win for Vandy, 28-17.

L- Wake Forest was favored by 9.5 over Connecticut. We called it Wake Forest 33 Connecticut 14 and Connecticut absolutely demolished the Demon Deacons 51-17.

W+ Washington State is favored by 13 over Arizona State. We called it Washington State 47 Arizona State 16 with the final score being 34-19 for Washington State.

W+ West Virginia - the line was zero - vs. Pittsburgh. We called it West Virginia 27 Pittsburgh 23. The Mountaineers clobbered Pitt 52-31.

W+ Western Michigan was favored by 9.5 over Central Michigan. We called it Western Michigan 38 Central Michigan 24, and they do win 44-21.

L- Wisconsin was favored by 2 over Michigan State. We called it Michigan State 27 Wisconsin 26. Boy were we wrong. The Badgers ran wild, beating the Spartans 56-21. Dwayne Smith ran for 207 yards on only 21 carries and Lee Evans caught no less than 5 touchdown passes, with total receptions for 258 yards. Here again is a case where a football team gets thrashed partly because of poor coaching as the Spartans man-to-man coverage on Evans proved ineffectual - but no coaching change was made to put him under double coverage (except in some special situations), even though Evans had already caught 3 TD passes last year under man-to-man coverage against the Spartans. How can football coaches be this stupidly stubborn? It is a great mystery of the human psyche.

BCS Football Rankings

The Yin Blog under the title ""Does USC control its own BCS fate?" raises an interesting question at
yin.blog-city.com:

"So USC remains #2 in the new BCS rankings as of Nov.8. It has 6.27 points (where lower is better), and Ohio State is at #3 with 7.73 points. If USC and OSU, which both have 1 loss, win out, will USC hold on to second place?"

Yin works out the possibility that if both USC and OSU win all of the rest of their games, OSU on the strength of its upcoming strength of schedule might even surpass USC in the BCS rankings and thus gain the right to play in the national championship game against a team which will presumably be the presently undefeated Oklahoma Sooners. It is certainly possible that this could happen to OSU, and as defending national champions, might even be fitting, though whether they deserve to be in that final game will be decided in upcoming games.

I for one do not think the Buckeyes can beat Michigan on their home ground. In addition, USC still has to beat UCLA, which is never an easy task. So the season still has suspense.

Preseason NCAA Basketball AP Poll

The Preseason NCAA Basketball Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll ranks Connecticut (?) number one and Duke number two. See
ESPN.com - NCB - AP deja vu: UConn, Duke 1-2.

Who are we to disagree until the season starts, but it is a tough call, as Connecticut only went 23-11 last year and finished ranking only Nr. 11. Where is the player who will make this team a champion?

See the analysis of Dick Vitale of the Top 16.

In my opinion, you have to have a star to be a champion.

The coming new freshman stars this season

as determined by TheInsiders.com are found at

and Top 100 of 2003

LeBron James Line

James LeBron, nicknamed "King James", the much heralded basketball rookie for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has the honor of a special ESPN page devoted to his playing statistics called The LeBron Line. See

ESPN.com - NBA - LeBron James Line

LeBron is only 18 years old but was such a good basketball player that he could forego going to college and entered the professional basketball ranks straight out of high school - a disconcerting development in the NBA.

Interesting in this regard is the comparison of LeBron to rookie Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets, who led Syracuse to the NCAA collegiate basketball championship last year. We think Anthony is one of those rare superstar players called a "winner", and we think he has a great future ahead of him.

James LeBron has so much talent that the sky is the limit, but it remains to be seen whether he will ultimately enter the ranks of the Michael Jordans of the basketball world. If nothing goes wrong, he will.

College Football Predictions, Nov. 12 and weekend of November 15, 2003

Here are our College Football Predictions for the weekend of November 15, 2003. The real question is the Oklahoma-Baylor game. The Sooners beat Texas A&M 77-0, a team that beat Baylor 73-10, making the Okies 140-point favorites by compartive scores. The sky is the limit. The score epends on when they put the reserves in to play.

Akron - no line - Ohio. We call it Akron 26 Ohio 19.

LSU is favored by 6.5 over Alabama. We call it LSU 27 Alabama 20.
We have not done well calling LSU or Alabama games. The Crimson Tide came close to Oklahoma early in the season, closer than anyone this year, but has not been able to generate any consistency. LSU is laden with talent, but is unpredicatable. Could Alabama win? Yes, but this is unlikely as LSU has the home field advantage.

USC is favored by 29 over Arizona. We call it USC 42 Arizona 14. Arizona is improving and USC may take this one too lightly, so it may be closer than that.

Arkansas - no line - New Mexico State. We call it for the Razorbacks 43-14.

Houston is favored by 10.5 over Army. Houston has had some disastrous games. We call it Houston 31 Army 27.

Boise St. is favored by 40 over UTEP. How many TD passes will Ryan Dinwiddie throw? UTEP has no pass defense to speak of. We call it for Boise State 69-24.

Bowling Green is favored by 20 over Kent State. Bowling Green is in the top 25 BCS where it belongs. Kent State put 30 points on the scoreboard against Miami of Ohio and have good offense, so this could be an offensive showdown. We call it for Bowling Green but not by 20. Bowling Green 34 Kent State 24.

California is favored by 6 over visiting Washington. We think Cal can beat the spread and see Cal winning 28-21.

Clemson is favored by 14 over Duke. Clemson will be high on its win over Florida State but Duke inspired through a win over Georgia Tech last week. We think it will be close. Clemson 20 Duke 14.

Colorado State is favored by 13 over San Diego State. We forget that San Diego State lost by only 16-13 to Ohio State early in the season and in that game also dominated the statistics. They are coming off of wins against Wyoming and UNLV on the road, using a stiff defense. We think they may beat Colorado State 10-7.

Ball State is favored by 10 over Eastern Michigan, the home team. Our call is Ball State 26 Eastern Michigan 21.

Florida State is favored by 14.5 over North Carolina State. After losing last week, the Seminoles have something to prove against a weak North Carolina State defense. We call it Florida State 55 North Carolina State 38.

Kansas St. is favored by 1 over Nebraska. It is hard to beat the Huskers at home, where they have not lost all year, so it is unlikely that the Wildcats will beat them. NU is a team which consists of a great defense and a mediocre offense. We call it NU 24 Kansas State 13.

Hawaii is favored by 3 over Nevada. We call it for the home team Nevada 38-34.

New Mexico is favored by 4.5 over Air Force. We call it New Mexico 17 Air Force 14.

Notre Dame is favored by 8 over BYU. We call it BYU 31 Notre Dame 28.

Ohio St. is favored by 3 over Purdue. We call it Ohio State 24 Purdue 17.

Oklahoma is favored by 53 over Baylor. Texas A&M beat Baylor 73-10 and then lost to Oklahoma 77-0 so that the Okies are 140-point favorites by comparative score. It just depends on when the reserves are put into the game.
We call it Oklahoma 66 Baylor 0.

Oklahoma St. is favored by 20.5 over Kansas. We call it Oklahoma State 37 Kansas 27.

Oregon State is favored by 14 over Stanford. Stanford surprised last week but the Beavers are strong at home. We will have to call this one against the Cardinals, 37-27.

Penn St. is favored by 19 over Indiana. It has been a tough season for the Nittanly Lions, who we think will win here 21-13.

Boston College is favored by 7.5 over Rutgers. Our call is BC 31 Rutgers 21.

SMU - no line - Rice. We see Rice winning 27-24.

Southern Mississippi is favored by 17 over Tulane. We call it Southern Miss 27 Tulane 16.

College Football Predictions, Nov. 4-7/8, 2003 RESULTS

This was an unusual week in that many of the favored teams were on the road, so surprises were not only expected but we had a good number of upsets, even more than we predicted. This week our won loss record was a pretty mediocre 31-18 in picking the winners and we went a poor 22- 26 - 1 against the spread. For the season, our cumulative record in calling winners is 186-72 but we are now only 121-133-4 against the spread, so we are going to have to do better in the closing weeks of the season to come out on top.

W =win=means we called the game winner correctly
L =loss=means we did not call the game winner correctly
+ means we beat the spread
- means we did not beat the spread
o - means the spread was equalized or there was no spread listed

W+ Air Force was favored by 26. 5 over Army. We called it Air Force 44 Army 14. The pilots win 31-3.

W+ Washington was favored by 16 over Arizona, the home team. Arizona had done better at home than away. We thus called Arizona 31 Washington 28 and the upset took place as we called it 27-22.

W- Arkansas was favored by 7.5 over South Carolina. We called it Arkansas 34 S. Carolina 31. The Arkansas Razorbacks won handily 28-6 over the Gamecocks

W+ Idaho was favored by 2.5 over Arkansas State, the home team. We saw it as Arkansas State 27 Idaho 26. Again, a great call on our part as Arkansas State upset Idaho 24-23.

L+ Auburn was favored by 7.5 over Mississippi. Our call was Auburn 31 Mississippi 27. We thought the Rebels of Ole Miss were under-rated here and were right, as they won the game for their 6th straight win 24-20.

W+ Texas Tech was favored by 27.5 over Baylor. We called it Texas Tech 52 Baylor 21, even though Baylor is the home team and B.J. Symons had another field day throwing as the Red Raiders rolled over the Bears 62-14.

L- Boston College was favored by 3.5 over West Virginia - We called it BC 37 West Virginia 33, but the strong Mountaineers won 35-28.

W+ Northern Ill. was favored by 23 over Buffalo, the home team. We called it N. Illinois 38 Buffalo 14 and Northern Illinois won 40-9.

W- Akron was favored by 7 over Central Michigan, the home team. We called it Akron 27 Central Michigan 24, but Akron won 40-28.

L- Florida St. was favored by 16.5 over Clemson. We called it Florida State 39 Clemson 21. In one of the real upsets of the day, son Tommy Bowden coach of Clemson, beat father Bobby Bowden, coach of Florida State, 26-10, his first win in 5 tries.

L- Missouri, the visiting team, was favored by 4 over Colorado. Mizzou may be under-rated. Our call was Mizzou 41 Colorado 27. We were buffaloed, as Colorado won 21-16. It is hard to win in the thin air of Boulder.

W- Connecticut was favored by 8 over Rutgers. We called it Connecticut 37 Rutgers 17. Connecticut wins luckily 38-31.

L- Georgia Tech was favored by 13 over Duke. Our call was Georgia Tech 48 Duke 27 but the Blue Devils ripped the Yellow Jackets 41-17 in a result that can only be described as rather unbelievable.

W- South Florida was favored by 10.5 over East Carolina. Our call was South Florida 34 East Carolina 21. South Florida won 38-37 in overtime.

W+ Central Florida was favored by 11.5 over Eastern Michigan. We called it Eastern Michigan 35 Central Florida 31 and Eastern Michigan wins 19-13.

W- Florida was favored by 25 over Vanderbilt. Our call was Florida 48 Vanderbilt 13 but they only beat Vandy by 35-17.

W+ Southern Miss. was favored by 4.5 over Houston. We called it Southern Miss 38 Houston 14 and Southern Miss had not trouble with Houston 31-10.

L- Indiana was favored by 1 over Illinois. We called it Illinois 22 Indiana 21, but Indiana scored 10 unanswered 4th quarter points to win 17-14.

W+ Kansas St. was favored by 18 over Iowa State. We called it K-State 42 Iowa State 21. With Roberson health, this is again a very good team, as the Wildcats dominated the Cyclones 45-0.

L- Nebraska, the visiting team, was favored by 16.5 over Kansas. We called it Kansas 17 NU 14 but the Huskers lucked out another hapless win over a weak team 24-3. We do not think that NU can beat the Wildcats next week or Colorado the week after that. Unfortunately, it looks like Solich has saved his job as coach at NU, which means the Huskers will never again attain the football greatness they once enjoyed - at least not as long as the mediocre Solich is head coach. The virtual non-use of Isaiah Fluellen is a good example. Why is Fluellen not being allowed to field kickoffs and punts and to run in the backfield? The thin talent at Nebraska is not being optimally placed. And that is poor offensive coaching. Only the defensive coaching seems to have moved forward this year.

W+ Louisiana Tech was favored by 21.5 SMU. Our call was Louisiana Tech 37 SMU 14, and they rolled 41-6.

W- Texas was favored by 16 over Louisiana-Monroe. We called it North Texas 35 Louisiana-Monroe 10 but it was an unexpected struggle for North Texas which eked out a 28-26win.

L- Miami (Fla.)was favored by 12 over Tennessee. We called it Miami 34 Tennessee 17. Once mighty Miami of Florida however lost its second straight, losing to the Volunteers 10-6 at home. Hard to believe but true.

W- Miami (Ohio) was favored by 7.5 over Bowling Green. Our call was 31-30 for Miami of Ohio, but the RedHawks of Miami of Ohio won handily 33-10 due to four fumbles by the Falcons. The better Miami team?

W+ Middle Tennessee State was favored by 5 over Troy St. We called it Middle Tennessee State 38 Troy State 24. Middle Tennessee State won 27-20.

W+ Minnesota was favored by 7.5 over Wisconsin. Our call was Minnesota 28 Wisconsin 27. The Golden Gophers won the game on a field goal with 1 second left on the clock 37-34.

W- Alabama was favored by 10 over Mississippi State. Our call was Alabama 27 Mississippi State 20. In fact, the Crimson Tide rolled easily, winning 38-0.

W+ Nevada was favored by 2.5 over Fresno St. Our call was Fresno State 35 Nevada 28. Fresno State won 27-10.

W+ Colorado St. was favored by 1 over New Mexico. We called it New Mexico 38 Colorado State 35, which turned out to be nearly right on the button New Mexico wins 37-34.

L- Utah St. was favored by 2 over New Mexico State. We called it Utah State 37 New Mexico State 17, but New Mexico State surprised everyone and won 26-21.

L+ Wake Forest was favored by 8 over North Carolina. We called it Wake Forest 30 North Carolina 23 and the Demon Deacons were upset by the Tar Heels 42-34.

W+ Penn St. was favored by 5 over Northwestern. We called it Northwestern 27 Penn State 24 and were right as the Nittany Lions went down in defeat 17-7.

W- Notre Dame was favored by 8 over Navy. We called it Notre Dame 27 Navy 17. The Irish barely win 27-24.

W+ Ohio was favored by 3.5 over Kent State. We called it Kent State 27 Ohio 23. After a sluggish start, Kent State, which had look good against Miami of Ohio previously, won 37-33.

W- Ohio St. was favored by 7 over Michigan St. - We saw the Buckeyes winning at home 27-21 in a tough game, but the Buckeyes win by 10, 33-23.

W+ Oklahoma was favored by 32.5 over Texas A&M. We called it for the Okies 61-0 who won 77-0, the score which already was this high after only three quarters.

W+ Texas was favored by 3 over Oklahoma State. We called it Texas 34 Oklahoma State 33, but the Longhorns, after trailing 16-14 a the half, crushed the Cowboys 55-16. When that happens, THAT's COACHING.

W+ California was favored by 1 over Oregon, but the Ducks can be tough. We called it Oregon 37 Cal 34 and we were right as the Golden Bears were shot down by the Ducks 21-17.

W+ Virginia Tech was favored by 4.5 over Pittsburgh. We called it for Pitt 27-21, and as we suspected, Virginia Tech was still gloating over its victory over Miami of Florida, as the Hokies lost to the Panthers 31-28.

L- Purdue was favored by 3 over Iowa. We called it for Iowa 28 Purdue 24. Iowa, which we had ranked as stronger than this, let us down again, as Purdue won with surprising ease 27-14.

L- Tulsa was favored by 2.5 over Rice. Our call was Rice 28 Tulsa 27. Rice put up a good battle but lost 31-28.

L- Arizona State was favored by 2.5 over Stanford. We called it Arizona State 27 Stanford 20. Never go against your alma mater? The Cardinals surprise 38-27.

Wo Syracuse - no line - Temple. We called it Syracuse 41 Temple 7. Syracuse rolls over temple 41-17.

L- UAB was favored by 12 over Tulane. We called it UAB 37 Tulane 16. This was a big surprise as a very strong UAB team was upset by Tulane 38-24.

L- UNLV was favored by 5 over San Diego St. We called it UNLV 40 San Diego State 20. In a clear upset, San Diego State inexplicably held UNLV scoreless and won 7-0.

L- San Jose State was favored by 3 over UTEP. We called it UTEP 25 San Jose State 22. San Jose State went wild 69-41 as Scott Rislov threw for 543 yards.

W+ Washington State was favored by 10 over UCLA. We called it Washington State 47 UCLA 35. IN a game dominated by fumbles, the Bruins were no match against the Cougars, who won 31-13.

L- Western Mich. was favored by 2 over Ball St. We called it Ball State 35 Western Michigan 28. Western Michigan won 28-20.

Miami of Ohio beats Bowling Green 33-10 Nov. 4, 2003

The final score was 33-10, although it was closer by the statistics, with both teams running up about the same amount of first downs and total offense. I've been saying all year long that Miami of Ohio belongs in the Top 20 (they have not been ranked since 1974) and may in fact have the better of the nation's two Miami teams at this point in the season, as the Miami Hurricanes of Florida were drubbed ignominiously by the Virginia Tech Hokies 31-7 last weekend.

The RedHawks proved their merit against a Bowling Green team that had lost only once this season, by merely one TD to Ohio State. Maybe this game will make believers out of more football pundits, although the Falcons made it easy for Miami, fumbling the ball away four times, which is no way to win football games.

One thing is clear, once the bowl season comes, do not be in a hurry to bet against either Miami of Ohio or Bowling Green, or you may be sorry.

College Football Predictions, Nov. 1-2, 2003 - RESULTS

Just a short note before we go to the results: The great game coming up on November 4 is Miami of Ohio vs. Bowling Green. These are both favorite teams of ours this season. Miami of Ohio has only lost to Iowa and Bowling Green has only lost to Ohio State, teams which we can rank about even. The game should be a real barnburner. We go with Miami of Ohio only because they are the home team and call a Miami win 31-30 over Bowling Green in a great game.

Here are the results of our prognostications for the NCAA college football weekend of November 1 and 2, 2003:

This was a wild weekend with many lopsided scores, often in games where it was not expected. We called the winners in in 37 of 48 games, i.e. 37-11 for winners. However, we went an unprecedentedly bad 19 - 29 against the spread because of the great number of high-scoring lopsided games. Our cumulative record for the season is now 155 winners called out of 209 games for a 155-54 record. Our record against the spread is now 99-107-3. We surely must improve the coming week, where we are going to take the new philosophy that if a spread is large, the favored team is likely to surpass it. We will see how this philosophy fares.

W =win=means we called the game winner correctly
L =loss=means we did not call the game winner correctly
+ means we beat the spread
- means we did not beat the spread
o - means the spread was equalized or there was no spread listed

W+ Air Force was favored by 3 over Utah - we called it Utah 31 Air Force 24. The game went into OVERTIME after Air Force scored 16 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to tie the game. After being tied at regulation 23-23, Utah won 45-43.

W+ Arizona State was favored by 3.5 over California - we called it Cal 27 Arizona State 24. In fact, California led Arizona State 41-17 at the half and won in a romp 51-23.

L- Arkansas was favored by 3.5 over Kentucky - we called it Kentucky 24 Arkansas 21. It went into OVERTIME after a 24-24 tie at regulation - again we had it called right, but in overtime Arkansas won 71-63.

W+ Auburn was favored by 37.5 over Louisiana-Monroe - we called it Auburn 59 Louisiana-Monroe 7. As we said, this was a real "mismatch", with Auburn leading at the half, 45-0. The score hit my predicted 59-7 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Final score 73-7.

W+ Boise St. was favored by 6 over BYU, the home team - we called it Boise State 42 BYU 31
Ryan Dinwiddie did not even have one of his better days in a snow-marked game which Boise State won by routing BYU 50-12, this is a team which lost only 35-18 to USC. Maybe Boise State will finally now make the top 20 rankings, where they belong.

W+ Boston College was favored by 1 over Pittsburgh - we called it Pitt 21 Boston College 20.
Pittsburgh won 24-13.

W- Central Michigan was favored by 8.5 over Eastern Michigan - we called it C.Michigan 27 E.Michigan 24
It was tied 10-10 at the half, but after that it was all Central Michigan, winning 38-10.

L- Colorado State was favored by 11 over Wyoming - we called it Colorado State 35 Wyoming 18
Colorado State led 21-14 at the half but lost 35-28.

W+ Connecticut was favored by 12 over Western Michigan - we called it Connecticut 35 W.Michigan 13
Connecticut won the game 41-27 after falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter but coming back strong.

W+ Florida St. was favored by 11.5 over Notre Dame - we called it Florida State 38 Notre Dame 17
We thought Notre Dame did not have the team this year and we were right, Florida State rolled 37-0.

W- Fresno State was favored by 15 over SMU - we called it Fresno State 38 SMU 14
Final score Fresno State 20 SMU 11.

W+ Georgia was favored by 2.5 over Florida the home team - we called it Florida 24 Georgia 2. öWe wrote: "Florida has often looked terrible season but looked impressive last week. As the home team, they may shock Georgia." and indeed they did, 16-13.

W- Hawaii was favored by 12.5 over San Jose State we called it Hawaii 37 San Jose State 17
Hawaii barely managed to win 13-10 in a game in which San Jose State put up stiff resistance.

W+ Iowa was favored by 26 over Illinois - we called it Iowa 35 Illinois 7
As we wrote, Illinois had no real chance of winning and the margin of victory was the only open question, with Iowa beating the spread 41-10.

W- Kansas St. was favored by 40 Baylor - we called it Kansas State 55 Baylor 7
Baylor put up a very good battle and only went down by 38-10, even leading K-Sate 3-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

W+ LSU was favored by 27 over Louisiana Tech - we called it LSU 31 Louisiana Tech 24
LSU rolled over the Techies 49 to 10 after leading by 49-0 at the half.

W- Marshall was favored by 14.5 over Akron - we called it Marshall 30 Akron 28
Marshal won 42-24.

W- Maryland was favored by 17 over North Carolina - we called it Maryland 21 North Carolina 17
Maryland scored 39 second quarter points and won 59-21.

W- Memphis was favored by 17.5 over East Carolina - we called it Memphis 41 East Carolina 21
After a rough start and a 17-17 tie at half-time, Memphis won 41-24. Now that was a tough spread to lose.

L- Miami (Fla.) was favored by 3.5 over Virginia Tech - we called it Miami of Florida 37 Virginia Tech 21
Last week, before Virginia Tech lost to West Virginia, I thought this would be the year for the Hokies to beat the Hurricanes. It was, as they topped Miami 31-7.

W+ Michigan was favored by 4 over Michigan State - we called it Michigan 28 Michigan State 21
We called this one pretty much right on the nose, with Michigan winning 27-20.

W+ Minnesota was favored by over 28 Indiana - we called it Minnesota 43 Indiana 7
We wrote that "Indiana has no legitimate chance of winning and the margin of victory seems the only question here", which turned out to be true as Minnesota rolled 55-7

W- Mississippi was favored by 7.5 over South Carolina - we called it Mississippi 38 South Carolina 24
After leading by four touchdowns 43-14, Ole Miss fell apart in the late 3rd quarter and 4th quarter and barely won 43-40.

W+ Navy was favored by 9 over Tulane - we called it Navy 28 Tulane 14
Navy kept up its good form and beat Tulane 35-17.

L- Nevada was favored by 6 over Rice - we called it Nevada 33 Rice 16
This was an upset in our books as Rice won 52-42.

W+ New Mexico was favored by 8.5 over UNLV - we called it UNLV 31 New Mexico 27 and they won 37-35.

L- New Mexico State was favored by 14 over Arkansas State - we called it New Mexico State 31 Arkansas State 14. Arkansas State was blitzed badly last week, but came on here to win 28-24.

W+ North Carolina State was favored by 1 over Virginia - we called it N.C. State 21 Virginia 17
It was 37-37 going into the last minute. Final score NC State 51 Virginia 37.

W- Northern Illinois was favored by 15.5 over Ball State - we called it Northern Illinois 27 Ball State 13
Northern Illinois won 48-23, though I thought Ball State would do better than that.

W- Oklahoma was favored by 16.5 over Oklahoma State - we called it Oklahoma 31 Oklahoma State 28
I thought the Cowboys might get close to the Sooners, but there was no chance. The Okies win 52-9.

W- Oregon State was favored by 22 over Arizona - we called it Oregon State 35 Arizona 24
We thought the spread was too large, but Oregon State led 35-0 at halftime. Final score OSU 52 Arizona 23.

W- Ohio State was favored by 7 over Penn State - we called it Ohio State 24 Penn State 10
Penn State led most of the game and the Buckeyes only won it in the closing minutes 21-20.

W- Purdue was favored by 19 over Northwestern - we called it Purdue 30 Northwestern 23
Amazing, but Purdue beats the spread 34-14.

L- South Florida was favored by 2.5 over Cincinnati - we called it Cincinnati 27 South Florida 23
We thought Cincinnati on a neutral field had the better team but South Florida prevailed IN OVERTIME 24-17.
We do hate to lose these, where we called the spread correctly for regulation play.

W- Southern Mississippi was favored by 22 over Louisiana-Lafayette Southern Miss 38 Louisiana-Lafayette 21. Southern Miss rolled 48-3.

W- Tennessee was favored over Duke by 24.5 and we called it Tennessee 37 Duke 9. Duke put up quite a battle before going down 23-6.

L- Texas was favored by 6 over Nebraska - we called it unbelievingly for our alma mater Nebraska 19 Texas 16. After this game, we now know where the Huskers truly stand as a football team - and it is not good, as both offense and defense looked miserable, with Texas really thumping them 31-7, as the defense allowed 174 rushing yards by the Longhorns' Cedric Benson. In other words, the previous Husker loss to Mizzou was no fluke. What an endless series of humiliations the Cornhusker fans must suffer under Coach Solich for the once proud Huskers, who are now nothing but also-rans. If they lose a few more, we are hoping that it is finally "goodbye Solich". My favorite for the NU coaching position, the Boise State coach, keeps winning, with exciting football - what a difference. The Huskers once took Devaney from this region as coach - a move of genius - and they should follow this formula in the future.

L- Texas A&M was favored by 9 over Kansas - we called it Kansas 35 Texas A&M 31
In our books, a surprising loss by Kansas 45-33.

W+ Texas Tech was favored by 14 over Colorado - we called it Texas Tech 48 Colorado 35
The Colorado secondary will be no match for Symons. Final score 26-21.

W+ Tulsa was favored by 8.5 over UTEP - we called it Tulsa 36 UTEP 18. Final score Tulsa 56 UTEP 28.

W- UAB was favored by 21.5 over Army - we called it UAB 37 Army 7. Final score UAB 24 Army 9.

L- UCLA was favored by 6 over Stanford - we called it UCLA 37 Stanford 17.
This had not been a good football year for my alma mater Stanford but they upset UCLA here 21-14.

W- USC was favored by 11.5 over Washington State - we called it Southern Cal 35 Washington State 34. Washington State was no match for US which won 43-16.

W+ Utah State was favored by 1 over Middle Tennessee State - we called it Utah State 27 Middle Tennessee State 14. We wrote that Utah State went wild last week and might give Middle Tennessee State more than they can handle, which turned out to be true as they rolled 41-20 leading by 35-0 after the 3rd quarter. The team seems to be improving.

L- Wake Forest was favored by 1 over Clemson - we called it Clemson 27 Wake Forest 21
Definitely one of our worst calls as Wake Forest led 35-0 at the half and won 45-17.

L- Washington was favored by 1.5 over Oregon - we called it Oregon 31 Washington 27
Washington clobbered Oregon 42-10.

W+ West Virginia was favored by 21 over Central Florida - we called it West Virginia 35 Central Florida 17. We called this one nearly right on the money as the final score was West Viginia 36 Central Flroida 18.
