College Football Game Predictions AND Results Week 6 2009 Season
Odds were posted according to the College Football Prediction Tracker, Monday, October 5, 2009 10:15 AM.
Predictions are based on YPPSYS calculations for the 2009 season based primarily on NAYPPA as calculated from stats available at cfbstats.com and strength of schedule ratings according to the Massey Ratings. However, we tweak our stats in some cases.
We make no warranties as to the truth or accuracy of our information. As always, we do this in good fun only - do not rely on our predictions for anything - and we disclaim any and all liability for any reliance upon our prognostications. Football is sport. May the best team win.
Going into this week, we are 204-76 in picking the winner, including a number of games that had no line, and we are 118-116-2 against the spread.
Here are our predictions for the 6th Week.
Tuesday, October 6, 2009
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are underdogs on the road by 5.5 points at the Troy Trojans. Our Call: YPPSYS calls it for Troy 27-23. Result: Troy won easily 31-7 as the Middle Tennessee offense fizzled and as Troy showed signs of recovering from a rough season start in which they lost to Bowling Green 31-14 and to Florida 56-6. This week we are 1-0 W/L in picking the winner and 0-1 W/L against the spread.

Update, October 9, 2009 - ESPN has a video of the big plays in this game in an article by Tim Griffin on Suh, defensive front spark Cornhuskers' comeback.
_______________
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are favored on the road by 1 point at the Missouri Tigers. Our Call: The Huskers have to win this game to stay on track this season. YPPSYS calls it for the Cornhuskers 23-13. The Husker offense ranks 4th in the nation in yards per play gained at 7.0, and the Big Red is tied for 19th in terms of yards per play allowed on defense with 4.3. On paper, Missouri should not be able to beat them. Result: In extremely sloppy weather conditions the defenses dominated this game, as Nebraska won 27-12, scoring all of its points in the 4th quarter with the help of two pass interceptions, after trailing miserably at the end of 3 quarters, 12-0, aided by hopeless playcalling. The Nebraska defense allowed only 225 yards for a superb 2.9 yards per play average, while its own anemic offense, only because of a couple of big plays and largely because of enabling defensive play, put up 263 yards for a 4 yard per play average, which is still subpar. We remain convinced that it is the Huskers essentially timid offensive coordination that is the team's primary problem. According to cfbstats.com, Nebraska ranks 101st in the nation in their passing attack from their own 21 to 39-yard line! That is inexcusably incompetent offensive coordination because if you can not move the ball in that area of the field passing, you are going to be punting a lot and not only NOT scoring, but also giving the other team better field position and opportunities to score against you. Between the 40-yard lines, where the game is not decided, Nebraska ranks 22nd in the nation, but as the going gets tougher, the offensive playcalling fizzles, as the Huskers then rank 85th in the nation in passing in the opponent's 39 to 21-yard line territory and 73rd in rushing. Such profound discrepancies are the products of predictable, unimaginative playcalling. A smarter head coach will beat Nebraska every time, and, as in the case of Virginia Tech, he did, even though the Huskers had the more dominating team. It is not enough to have the right players. Offense demands coaching intelligence.
Defense, as in this game, wins football games, but you have to run an offense that can score aggressively and regularly, not just wait for a break from its own defense. Nebraska punted an inexcusable 8 times and was also penalized 108 yards, while fumbling 5 times and losing two of them. That is offensive bungling. The Cornhuskers will have trouble next week against Texas Tech, which put up 24 points against Texas in losing 34-24. The Husker offense is weaker than Texas, which scores 11 points more per game, and the Nebraska defense, giving up 4 yards per play is also not as good as that of the Longhorns, who give up only 3.7 yards per play, so, comparatively speaking, it is going to be a tough game for the Huskers to win against the Red Raiders. Nebraska is light years removed from the best Husker teams of the 1990's. This week we are 2-0 W/L in picking the winner and 1-1 W/L against the spread.
Friday October 9, 2009
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are underdogs by 6.5 points at the Nevada Wolf Pack. Our Call: YPPSYS calls it for Nevada 31-27. Result: Nevada won 37-14. This week we are 3-0 W/L in picking the winner and 1-2 W/L against the spread.
Saturday October 10, 2009
The Miami of Ohio Redhawks are underdogs by 20.5 points at the Northwestern Wildcats. Our Call: YPPSYS calls it for Northwestern 31-24. Result: Northwestern won 16-6. This week we are 4-0 W/L in picking the winner and 2-2 W/L against the spread.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles are underdogs by 21.5 points at the Central Michigan Chippewas. Our Call: YPPSYS calls it for Central Michigan 35-14. Result: Eastern Michigan controlled the ball for 33 minutes and 33 seconds and lost by 48 points as Central Michigan won 56-8. Coaches who play and analysts who support ball possession football should go back 50 years where they belong. This week we are 5-0 W/L in picking the winner and 2-3 W/L against the spread.
The West Virginia Mountaineers are favored by 8.5 points at the Syracuse Orange. Our Call: YPSSYS favors the Mountaineers 39-17. Result: West Virginia won 37-13. This week we are 6-0 W/L in picking the winner and 3-3 W/L against the spread.
The Vanderbilt Commodores are favored by 12.5 points at Army Black Knights. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Vanderbilt by 11.5 points, so we call it for Vanderbilt 28-17. Result: Army won in overtime 16-13. This week we are 6-1 W/L in picking the winner and 4-3 W/L against the spread.
The Purdue Boilermakers are underdogs by 4 points at the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Our Call: YPSSYS calls it for Purdue 27-24. Result: Minnesota won 35-20. This week we are 6-2 W/L in picking the winner and 4-4 W/L against the spread.
The Michigan State Spartans are favored by 4 points at the Illinois Fighting Illini. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Michigan State 35-20. Result: Michigan State won 24-14. This week we are 7-2 W/L in picking the winner and 5-4 W/L against the spread.

The Kentucky Wildcats are underdogs by 12 points at the South Carolina Gamecocks. Our Call: YPPSYS favors South Carolina 32-14. Result: South Carolina won 28-26. This week we are 10-2 W/L in picking the winner and 6-6 W/L against the spread.
The Ball State Cardinals are underdogs by 13.5 points at the Temple Owls. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Temple 31-7. Result: Temple won 24-19. This week we are 11-2 W/L in picking the winner and 6-7 W/L against the spread.
The Auburn Tigers are favored by 2 points at the Arkansas Razorbacks. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Auburn 36-28. Result: The Razorbacks stomped Auburn 44-23. How could Malzahn let that happen - or was it Chizik's fault? This week we are 11-3 W/L in picking the winner and 6-8 W/L against the spread.
The Houston Cougars are favored by 2.5 points at Mississippi State Bulldogs. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Mississippi State 31-30. Result: Houston beat Mississippi State 31-24. This week we are 11-4 W/L in picking the winner and 6-9 W/L against the spread.
The New Mexico Lobos are underdogs by 10 points at the Wyoming Cowboys. Our Call: YPPSYS favors New Mexico 17-16. Result: Wyoming beat New Mexico 37-13. This week we are 11-5 W/L in picking the winner and 6-10 W/L against the spread.
The Connecticut Huskies are underdogs by 10.5 points at the Pittsburgh Panthers. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Pittsburgh 24-17. Result: Pittsburgh won 24-21. This week we are 12-5 W/L in picking the winner and 7-10 W/L against the spread.

The Oregon Ducks are favored by 6 points at the UCLA Bruins. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Oregon 17-14. Result: Oregon beat UCLA 24-10. This week we are 13-6 W/L in picking the winner and 7-12 W/L against the spread.
The Wisconsin Badgers are underdogs by 16 points at the Ohio State Buckeyes. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Ohio State 31-14. Result: Ohio State won 31-13. This week we are 14-6 W/L in picking the winner and 8-12 W/L against the spread.
The Indiana Hoosiers are underdogs by 7 points at the Virginia Cavaliers. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Virginia 21-20. Result: Virginia won 47-7. This week we are 15-6 W/L in picking the winner and 8-13 W/L against the spread.
The Baylor Bears are underdogs by 24 points at the Oklahoma Sooners. Our Call: Baylor lost its starting QB Robert Griffin for the season and Oklahoma without injured QB Sam Bradford is nothing special. It is unclear whether Bradford will play against Baylor so the outcome here is anyone's guess and stats are probably not very useful. Oklahoma was so decimated by graduation from last year that this team is a shadow of the 2008 team. We call it for Oklahoma 24-17. Result: Oklahoma won 33-7. This week we are 16-6 W/L in picking the winner and 8-14 W/L against the spread.
The Navy Midshipmen are favored by 13 points at the Rice Owls. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Navy 27-10. Result: Navy beat Rice 63-14. This week we are 17-6 W/L in picking the winner and 9-14 W/L against the spread.

The Alabama Crimson Tide is favored by 5.5 points at the Mississippi Rebels. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Alabama 21-9. Result: Alabama beat Mississippi 22-3. This week we are 18-7 W/L in picking the winner and 11-14 W/L against the spread.
The Duke Blue Devils are underdogs by 15 points at the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Our Call: YPPSYS favors North Carolina State 37-14. Result: Duke beat North Carolina State 49-28. This week we are 18-8 W/L in picking the winner and 11-15 W/L against the spread.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are favored by 17.5 points at the Washington State Cougars. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Arizona State 38-14. Result: Arizona State won 27-14. This week we are 18-9 W/L in picking the winner and 11-16 W/L against the spread.
The Utah Utes are favored by 6.5 points at the Colorado State Rams. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Colorado State 24-21. Result: Utah trailed 17-3 but came back late in the game and won 24-17. This week we are 18-10 W/L in picking the winner and 11-17 W/L against the spread.
The Ohio Bobcats are favored by 4 points at the Akron Zips. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Ohio 28-16. Result: Ohio beat Akron 19-7. This week we are 19-10 W/L in picking the winner and 12-17 W/L against the spread.
The Maryland Terrapins are underdogs by 11 points at the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Wake Forest 31-17. Result: Wake Forest beat Maryland 42-32. This week we are 20-10 W/L in picking the winner and 12-18 W/L against the spread.

The North Texas Mean Green are underdogs by 6 points at the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. Our Call: YPPSYS favors North Texas 27-24. Result: Lafayette overcame a 34-24 deficit and won 38-34. This week we are 21-12 W/L in picking the winner and 14-19 W/L against the spread.
The Stanford Cardinal is favored by 2.5 points at the Oregon State Beavers. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Stanford 30-21. Result: Stanford fell behind 31-7 at the half and could no longer catch up, losing 38-28 as Jacquizz Rodgers put up 189 rushing for the Beavers. This week we are 21-13 W/L in picking the winner and 14-20 W/L against the spread.
The Kansas State Wildcats are underdogs by 17 points at the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Texas Tech 38-20. Result: Steven Sheffield made his debut as as starting quarterback, having replaced the nation's leading passer, Taylor Potts, who suffered a concussion in the Red Raiders last game, completing 33 of 41 passes for 490 yards and 7 touchdowns as Texas Tech blew K-State off the map, 66-14. In the first half, Sheffield threw 5 TDS and passed for 370 yards, a school record - and at Texas Tech, that is something. Whether the Nebraska offense can score enough points to offset the Red Raiders scoring next week is the question. If the Huskers are lucky, Potts will start. This week we are 22-13 W/L in picking the winner and 15-20 W/L against the spread.
The Colorado Buffaloes are underdogs by 31.5 points at the Texas Longhorns. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Texas 50-7. Result: The Longhorns started slowly, trailing the Buffs 14-3 in the first half, as Texas came back to win it 38-14. This week we are 23-13 W/L in picking the winner and 15-21 W/L against the spread.
The TCU Horned Frogs are favored by 10.5 points at the Air Force Falcons. Our Call: YPPSYS favors TCU 28-13. Result: TCU won 20-17. This week we are 24-13 W/L in picking the winner and 15-22 W/L against the spread.
The Utah State Aggies are favored by 11 points at New Mexico State Aggies. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Utah State 41-21. Result: New Mexico State won 20-17. This week we are 24-14 W/L in picking the winner and 15-23 W/L against the spread.
The Idaho Vandals are underdogs by 6.5 points at the San Jose State Spartans. Our Call: YPSSYS favors Idaho 31-13. Result: Idaho won 29-25. This week we are 25-14 W/L in picking the winner and 16-23 W/L against the spread.
The East Carolina Pirates are favored by 7 points at the Southern Methodist Mustangs. Our Call: YPPSYS favors SMU 31-24. Result: SMU won 28-21. This week we are 26-14 W/L in picking the winner and 17-23 W/L against the spread.
The UTEP Miners are favored by 3 points at the Memphis Tigers. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Memphis 34-31. Result: Memphis won 35-20. This week we are 27-14 W/L in picking the winner and 18-23 W/L against the spread.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are underdogs by 2.5 points at the Florida State Seminoles. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Georgia Tech 31-23. Result: Georgia Tech won 49-44. This week we are 28-14 W/L in picking the winner and 19-23 W/L against the spread.
The Florida Gators are favored by 11.5 points at the LSU Tigers. Our Call: How good is Florida? The Gators at the moment lead the nation in yards per play on offense at 7.7 AND also lead the nation in yards per play allowed on defense at 3.4. That is domination. The Florida starting quarterback, Heisman winning Tim Tebow suffered a concussion on September 26 and as of October 5 had not yet been cleared for practice, so that this game can not be called by normal standards. With Tebow at the helm, our stats would favor Florida by about 41-14, but given the quarterback situation at Florida, this game might closer. We call it for Florida 24-10. LSU is a gritty outfit, but should be no match for the Gators, even without Tebow. Result: Florida won 13-3. This week we are 29-14 W/L in picking the winner and 19-24 W/L against the spread.
The Michigan Wolverines are underdogs by 7.5 points at the Iowa Hawkeyes. Our Call: The Iowa defense is vulnerable to a strong passing attack, but the Hawkeyes otherwise have a legitimate crack at going undefeated this year. Michigan ranks 80th in the nation in yards gained through the air. YPPSYS calls it for Iowa 27-17. Result: Iowa won 30-28. This week we are 30-14 W/L in picking the winner and 19-25 W/L against the spread.
The Brigham Young Cougars are favored by 14 points at the UNLV Rebels. Our Call: YPPSYS favors BYU 41-13. Result: BYU won 59-21. This week we are 31-14 W/L in picking the winner and 20-25 W/L against the spread.
The Arizona Wildcats are favored by 2.5 points at the Washington Huskies. Our Call: YPSSYS favors Arizona 43-21. Result: Washington won 36-33. This week we are 31-15 W/L in picking the winner and 20-26 W/L against the spread.
The Fresno State Bulldogs are favored by 8 points at the Hawaii Warriors. Our Call: YPPSYS favors Hawaii 41-24. Result: Fresno State won 32-17. This week we were 31-16 W/L in picking the winner and 20-27 W/L against the spread.
For the season, after six weeks, we are thus far 236-93 W-L in picking the winner, including a number of games that had no official line, but we are now a very disappointing 138-143-2 against the spread. This latter figure should improve progressively through the season via our YPPSYS system which is based primarily on yards per play and schedule difficulty, a system which should become more accurate as the season wears on. The major difficulty this week was that the spreads were generally too wide on our side of the court.
Tennessee beat Georgia 45-19.
Oklahoma State beat Texas A&M 36-31.
Somehow we missed those games in our predictions.
In FCS football, number 1 ranked Richmond narrowly beat James Madison 21-17.
In Division II football, number 1 ranked Grand Valley State lost to Hillsdale 27-24.
In Division III football, number 1 ranked Mount Union narrowly beat Capital 28-21.
