THE BOWL GAMES BEGAN
Saturday, December 17, 2011
- The Temple Owls (now 9-4) were favored over the Wyoming Cowboys (now 8-5) by 7 points in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 6.5 points.]
-
SportPundit called it: 27-26 for Temple.
Temple rolled over the Cowboys 37-15 as the Owls' Bernard Pierce ran for 100 yards and 2 TDs on 25 carries as Wyoming had no answer for Temple's running game as the Owls punted only once. Brett Smith threw for 2 TDs but also 3 interceptions for Wymoning.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 1-0 in calling the winner and 0-1 against the spread. - The Utah State Aggies (now 7-6) were favored over the Ohio Bobcats (now 10-4) by 3 points in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at the blue field in Bronco Stadium in Boise. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 2.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 31-30 for Utah State.
After trailing the entire game, the Bobcats won 24-23 on a touchdown and subsequent PAT with 13 seconds to play in the game. The Aggies outgained Ohio 441 to 345 yards but their offense was stymied in the 4th quarter when they could have put the game away and the defense failed to hold Ohio on their final drive.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 1-1 in calling the winner and 1-1 against the spread. - The San Diego State Aztecs (now 8-5) were favored over the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (now 9-4) by 5 points in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. . [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 28-27 for San Diego State.
After falling behind 30-29 with 35 seconds left to play on a 12-yard TD pass by Aztecs quarterback Ryan Lindley to Colin Lockett, the Ragin' Cajuns moved the ball up the field quickly on the passing of Blaine Gautier and won 32-30 on a Brett Baer 50-yard field goal as time expired. The two Utah State and San Diego State "upsets" of favorites wiped out clean bowl prediction slates on most pick'em selections in online pick'em competitions and offline office pools. One must recall at this point in exposing the great injustices committed by the NCAA and the BCS bowl system that the Ragin' Cajuns were beaten 42-23 by a resurgent Western Kentucky team that was denied a bowl game this year in spite of finishing ahead of LA Lafayette in the Sun Belt Conference and posting one of the great season turn-arounds.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 1-2 in calling the winner and 2-1 against the spread.
Tueday, December 20, 2011
- The Florida International (FIU) Panthers (now 8-5) were favored over the Marshall Thundering Herd (now 7-6) by 4 points in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg, Florida. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 4 points.]
SportPundit called it: 30-24 for FIU.
The Thundering Herd beat the Panthers 20-10, as FIU was largely stymied on offense. The result is not surprising if one looks at Marshall's regular season wins this year over Southern Miss and Louisville, though one wonders what happened in puzzling losses to weaker teams.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 1-3 in calling the winner and 2-2 against the spread.
Wednesday, December 21, 2011
- The Texas Christian (TCU) Horned Frogs (now 11-2) were favored over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (now 8-5) by 11 points in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The Horned Frogs had to rally from a 24-17 deficit at the end of 3 quarters to win 31-24 in a fairly even game on the stats.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 2-3 in calling the winner and 3-2 against the spread.
Thursday, December 22, 2011
- The Boise State Broncos (now 12-1) were favored over the Arizona State Sun Devils (now 6-7) by 13 points in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
SportPundit called it: 38-24 for Boise State. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 14 points.]
The Boise State Broncos led by as much as 49-10 early in the fourth quarter in destroying the Sun Devils 56-24 in a show of force on offense and defense that made a mockery of the BCS bowl system and the way that top teams from non-BCS conferences are mismatched by that system in bowl games.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 3-3 in calling the winner and 4-2 against the spread.
Saturday, December 24, 2011
- The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (now 12-2) were favored over the Nevada Wolf Pack (7-5) by 6 points in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
SportPundit called it: 31-28 for Southern Miss. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 6 points.]
Merry Christmas! In a surprisingly defensive struggle, the Golden Eagles came back from a 14-7 deficit in the second quarter to beat the Wolf Pack 24-17 with one unanswered touchdown in the 4th quarter.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 4-3 in calling the winner and 4-3 against the spread.

This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 5-3 in calling the winner and 4-4 against the spread.

SportPundit called it: 31-30 for Western Michigan.
The Boilermakers recovered 2 onside kicks in the first half and Western Michigan turned the ball over 7 times (3 fumbles and 4 interceptions) -- compared to 4 turnovers for Purdue -- as the Boilermakers hung on to win 37-32 in a wild game in which Purdue dominated possession time but the Broncos put up more total yards, 485 to 442 yards.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 5-4 in calling the winner and 4-5 against the spread. - The North Carolina State Wolfpack (now 8-5) were favored over the Louisville Cardinals (now 7-6) by 1.5 points in the Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Cardinals outgained the Wolfpack 391 to 329 total net yards, but Teddy Bridgewater threw 3 interceptions for Louisville as North Carolina State won 31-24.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 5-5 in calling the winner and 4-6 against the spread.
Wednesday, December 28, 2011
- The Toledo Rockets (now 9-4) were favored over the Air Force Falcons (now 7-6) by 3 points in the Military Bowl - Presented by Northrop Grumman at Robert F. Kennedy RFK Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 3 points.]
SportPundit called it: 34-33 for Air Force.
The Falcons outgained Toledo 407 to 339 yards but went for the two-point conversion on a fake PAT at the end of the game and failed with less than a minute left on the clock to lose 42-41. One can applaud going for 2 but not on a fake, which is simply too risky. Either you have a good 2-point play in your bag or not. If not, kick the PAT. Check this one off to poor coaching viz. playcalling. The unheralded MAC continues to mash allegedly better conferences.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 5-6 in calling the winner and 5-6 against the spread.
- The Texas Longhorns (now 8-5) were favored over the California Golden Bears (now 7-6) by 4 points in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 3 points.]
SportPundit called it: 24-23 for Texas.
The Longhorns outgained Cal 255 to 195 total net yards and won the defensive struggle 21-10.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 6-6 in calling the winner and 5-7 against the spread.
Thursday, December 29, 2011
- The Florida State Seminoles (now 9-4) were favored over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (now 8-5) by 3 points in the Champs Sports Bowl at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 3 points.]
SportPundit called it: 28-27 for Notre Dame.
The Seminoles came back from a 14-0 deficit to beat the Fighting Irish 18-14, aided by 3 interceptions, in a game badly playcalled and poorly coached by Brian Kelly, whose quarterback shifting tactics probably cost the team the game and who spent more of his time chewing out the quarterback on the sideline than paying attention to winning a game that Notre Dame should have won. Great coaches win with the players they have. Poor coaches chew out their QBs for not playing like Tom Brady. You also have to call plays to fit the ability of your players. Many interceptions are caused by calling hard plays that need perfection to succeed, a perfection not often found in college football. This is a good game for head coaches to study on how NOT to coach or playcall the second half of a game.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 6-7 in calling the winner and 5-8 against the spread.
- The Baylor Bears (now 10-3) were favored over the Washington Huskies (now 7-6) by 9 points in the Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 9 points.]
SportPundit called it: 44-30 for Baylor.
Both Baylor and Washington should be on the market for new defensive talents on the field and in the coaching ranks after the Bears outscored the Huskies 67-56 in a game that set all kinds of new records for offense and scoring in an FBS bowl game. It was in fact the highest-scoring bowl game in regulation time in history, as Baylor put up 777 yards total offense to 620 for Washington. Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III broke Colt Brennan's season pass efficiency record of 186.0 by achieving 189.5, which can still be broken by Wisconsin's Russell Wilson, who goes into the Rose Bowl with a season pass efficiency of 191.6. Even so, Griffin was out-played in this game by Washington quarterback Keith Price, who accounted for 7 touchdowns, four passing and three running. Baylor had three backs run for more than 100 yards, topped by Terrance Ganaway, who carried 21 times for 200 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jermaine Kearse caught 5 of Price's passes for 198 yards and 1 TD.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 7-7 in calling the winner and 6-8 against the spread.
Friday, December 30, 2011

SportPundit called it: 28-27 for Tulsa.
The Cougars beat the Hurricanes 24-21 in a defensive struggle in which both teams punted 8 times. The Cougars outgained Tulsa 344 to 272 yards.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 7-8 in calling the winner and 6-9 against the spread.
- The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (now 9-4) were favored over the Iowa State Cyclones (now 6-7) by 2 points in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, NY. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 1.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 21-20 for Iowa State.
The Scarlet Knights beat the Cyclones 27-13 on an 86-yard pass from Chas Dodd to Brandon Coleman after Iowa State had lcosed the gap to 20-13 in the 4th quarter. Rutgers outgained Iowa State 369 to 311 yards.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 7-9 in calling the winner and 6-10 against the spread. - The Mississippi State Bulldogs (now 7-6) were favored over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (now 6-7) by 6.5 points in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 13.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 34-24 for Oklahoma.
The Sooners won 31-14 as Oklahoma scored 10 points in the last 2 1/2 minutes of play. The Hawkeyes outgained Oklahoma 292 to 275 yards, much of that advantage in a long 1st quarter drive that ended on a 4th and 1 at the Sooner 6 that resulted in a 3-yard rushing loss and no points. I think you have to take the 3 points that early in the game against Oklahoma.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 9-9 in calling the winner and 6-12 against the spread.
Saturday, December 31, 2011

SportPundit called it: 31-28 for Houston.
The Cougars blitzed the Nittany Lions in the first half, rolling up a 24-7 advantage on nearly 400 yards passing and 3 TDs by Case Keenum and then held on to win 30-14 with only 2 field goals in the second half as Keenum finished with 533 yards passing.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 13-11 in calling the winner and 8-16 against the spread. - The South Carolina Gamecocks (now 11-2) were favored over the Nebraska Cornhuskers (now 9-4) by 1 point in the Capital One Bowl at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 2.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 27-20 for South Carolina.
The Huskers allowed an extra point to be blocked after their opening 1st quarter touchdown and have it returned for 2 contra-points, then committed 2 critical turnovers on drives for makeable scores and for good measure then gave up a Hail Mary TD at the end of the 1st half to go into the half trailing 16-13 instead of leading 21-7, as they should have led, based on their play otherwise in the first half. They seem to have given up in the 4th quarter, bowing out of the season quite ignominiously in losing to the Gamecocks 30-13, as Nebraska did not score in the last 3 quarters in spite of having one of the best field goal kickers in the nation. You have to build your playcalling around that if you can not score touchdowns. Nebraska did neither. The 2012 season might look bleak for Cornhusker fans, given their now weak recruiting and prevailing general mediocrity in game planning, field marshalling and playcalling.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 14-11 in calling the winner and 9-16 against the spread.
- The Georgia Bulldogs (now 10-4) were favored over the Michigan State Spartans (now 11-3) by 3 points in the Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 3.5 points.]

The Gators beat the Buckeyes 24-17 and the Big Ten is thus 1-3 today, with honor being saved by Michigan State.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 16-11 in calling the winner and 11-16 against the spread.
- The Oregon Ducks (now 12-2) were favored over the Wisconsin Badgers (11-2) by 6.5 points in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. The Ducks outlasted the Badgers 45-38, as Wisconsin gained 508 net yards total offense to 621 yards for Oregon.

- The Michigan Wolverines (now 11-2) were favored over the Virginia Tech Hokies (now 11-3) by 2 points in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 2.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 30-27 for Michigan.
Is there such a thing as destiny? The Wolverines won in overtime 23-20, but only on the scoreboard, as the Hokies outgained them 377 to 184 yards. Whenever a team gets beaten that badly on the field and still wins, that's the kind of TOP coaching for which Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer is usually known, but not this time, as Brady Hoke emerged the winner in his remarkable 1st-year head coaching season at Michigan.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 19-11 in calling the winner and 13-17 against the spread.
Wednesday, January 4, 2012
- The Clemson Tigers (10-3) are favored over the West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3) by 3 points in the Discover Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 3.5 points.]
SportPundit calls it: 27-24 for West Virginia.
Mountaineer fans just got a new hero in their sometimes disputed head coach Dana Holgorsen. It is not often that the underdog team emerges as the winner by 37 points, but the 70-33 West Virginia win over Clemson verges on the ridiculous. After all, Clemson was the ACC champ this season, but Geno Smith and the Mountaineers found that the Tigers had an Achilles heel, their pass defense, by completing 31 of 42 passes for 401 yards and a bowl game record-tying 6 touchdowns. Tavon Austin caught 11 passes for 117 yards a bowl record tying 4 touchdowns. WVSports.com has a list of the Orange Bowl records set (go there to the bottom of the page).
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 20-11 in calling the winner and 14-17 against the spread.
Friday, January 6, 2012
- The Arkansas Razorbacks (now 11-2) were favored over the Kansas State Wildcats (now 10-3) by 7 points in the AT&T Cotton Bowl at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 7.5 points.]
SportPundit called it: 31-27 for Arkansas.
The Razorbacks led the Wildcats only 19-16 in the 3rd quarter after blowing a 19-point first-half lead but held on to emerge as the 29-16 victors. It was not an easy win as Arkansas did not get a first down in the 1st quarter in a game in which the defenses dominated, as K-State gained only 260 yards to 345 for the Hogs. Arkansas gained 5.7 yard per play to 3.7 yards per play for K-State, a 14-point theoretical margin substantiated by the game score. The difference between the SEC and all other conferences remains the quality of defense.
This final "Week 15" (Bowl Games) SportPundit is 21-11 in calling the winner and 14-18 against the spread.
Saturday, January 7, 2012

SportPundit calls it: 28-21 for SMU.
The Mustangs beat the Panthers 28-6 after forging a 21-0 first quarter lead, which was a surprisingly defensive battle thereafter among two teams whose head coaches tout offense.

- The LSU Tigers (13-0) are favored over the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1) by 1 point in the Allstate BCS National Championship Bowl Game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. [The spread according to the College Football Prediction Tracker on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 10:45 AM. was 1 point.]
SportPundit calls it: 20-16 for Alabama.
Did anyone rank Alabama Number One after the regular season? We did. We wrote previously that the SportPundit Rankings and Ratings 2011 FBS After Week 14 of Play favored the Crimson Tide over the Tigers by 7 points and that all other things equal, the Crimson Tide had the better offense AND better defense, according to the stats and had lost to LSU in the regular season game only because of botched field goals. That analysis was proven in the Alabama 21-0 shutout of LSU in the BCS national championship game, in which the Tigers were held to 5 first downs, crossed the 50-yard only once, and were held to 93 net total yards. This takes nothing away from the superb LSU defense, which limited 'Bama to only one touchdown late in the 4th quarter as Alabama had to settle for 5 field goals. However, all the past hype about this LSU team one of the great teams of all time can now end. It is a terrific team, no doubt about that, but it lacks the offense that a great team needs to be ranked in that category. The yards per play stats this regular season showed that Alabama had an extraordinary team that DOES rank with the great teams of all time, in spite of the unfortunate regular season 9-6 loss. In the BCS title game, Alabama outgained LSU 384 to 92 yards, out first-downed the Tigers 21 to 5, and averaged 5.6 yards per play on offense while holding LSU to 2.1 yards per play, a NAYPPA (net average yards per play advantage) of 3.5 yards per play against the undefeated LSU Tigers. THAT is dominance.
