College Football Game Predictions for Week 14 (Fourteen) of the FBS College Football 2012 Season

SportPundit YPPSYS College Football Game Predictions for Week 14 (Fourteen) of the FBS college football 2012 regular season.

Our predictions this week rely on our 2012 College Football Rankings FBS After Week 12 of Play. We are making no new rankings this week after the 13th week of play because it is almost all over but the shouting this season, so let the remaining games decide who has the upper hand among the teams remaining for the glory.

UPDATE: This posting now includes the CFPT computer average spread prediction. Please note for these games -- contrary to our normal practice -- that we may update the line as we find changes. Sources for the "line" viz. "spread", i.e. predicted margin of victory by sports odds providers, are Maddux Sports, Odds Shark, Yahoo Sports Odds, and the College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") where we get the computer average spread prediction.

Caveat emptor (Buyer beware): We make this material available in good fun out of interest for the sport of college football. Please do not rely on our material to place bets or wagers of any kind. No one knows the exact outcome of a game or a season before it is played and that is what makes it so interesting. We disclaim any and all liability for the consequences of anyone relying in any way upon our postings, analysis, links or reasoning - for which we make no warranty of accuracy. May the best team win.

The visiting team is listed first, then the home team
e.g. Team A (visitor) v. Team B (home): B is favored by X points

WEEK 14 PREDICTIONS

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Scarlet Knights are favored by 3 points.
Our call
: Originally 17-13 for Rutgers, we go to 20-14 for Rutgers. If you had a mother-in-law that went to Rutgers, would you also not root for the Scarlet Knights? Rutgers ranks 4th in the nation in scoring defense at cfbstats.com. The CFPT came out initially at 5.73 points, so we go 6 points on the strength of the Rutgers defense.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 5.79 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Friday, November 30, 2012

Northern Illinois Huskies at Kent State Golden Flashes. The Huskies are favored by 6 points.
Our call
: 41-34 for Northern Illinois. The Huskies rank 11th in the country in scoring at 40.5 points per game, Kent State 35th at 34.4 points per game. We picked Northern Illinois as the MAC preseason favorites and stick with them here, although Kent State has also had a very impressive season, as mainstream media favorite Toledo faded down the stretch. We quoted USA Today at SportPundit in our 1st week predictions: ""No offense to the media, but they don't know what they are talking about." -- NIU second-year coach Dave Doeren, perhaps indulging on winning the MAC Championship in his first year, or talking about NIU getting picked second in the MAC West by the conference media." Will NIU win the MAC in 2012? We think so." Now we find out.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -4.37 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal is favored by 8.5 points.
Our call
: 24-13 for Stanford. This game will decide which team has the right to represent the Pac-12 in the Rose Bowl Game vs. either Nebraska or Wisconsin. As a graduate of both Nebraska and Stanford, I am of course rooting for that matchup. Stanford beat UCLA 35-17 last week, outgaining the Bruins 381 to 334 yards, while Nebraska topped Wisconsin 30-27 earlier in the regular season, outgaining the Badgers 440 to 295 yards. It is difficult to see UCLA beating the stellar Stanford defense.
Can they do it again?
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 10.28 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Baylor Bears. The Cowboys are favored by 4 points.
Our call
: 52-50 for Baylor. The Bears are on a  52-point winning score roll, beating K-State 52-24 and then Texas Tech 52-45. Can they keep it up? The Cowboys rank 3rd in the nation in scoring at 45.6 points per game and Baylor ranks 5th at 44.4 points per game. Could the home field give the Bears the narrow win in an offensive slugfest? Baylor ranks 2nd in the country in total offense at 575.5 yards per game and Oklahoma State 5th with 547.9 yards.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -3.53 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Oklahoma Sooners at TCU Horned Frogs The Sooners are favored by 6.5 points.
Our call
: 31-24 for Oklahoma. The Sooners rank 9th in the nation in total offense, while TCU is 64th. That's a difference of over 110 yards a game. On the other hand, TCU ranks 17th in the country in total defense and Oklahoma 47th, for a difference of about 60 yards a game. Let's call that one touchdown.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -5.97 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

UCF Knights at Tulsa Golden Hurricane Tulsa is favored by 1.5 points.
Our call
: 27-24 for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa outgained SMU 591 to 305 yards last week but turned the ball over 3 times and lost, thus backing into the West Division title of Conference USA. Tulsa barely beat UCF two weeks ago 23-21, outgaining the Knights 461 to 235 yards but giving up 2 turnovers. Former Husker quarterback Cody Green is having a nice season at Tulsa so we go with the Golden Hurricane here.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 1.54 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Cincinnati Bearcats at Connecticut Huskies The Bearcats are favored by 5 points.
Our call
: Originally 27-20 for Cincinnati, we go to 28-20 to avoid being locked in by the CFPT. UConn came out of hiding the last two weeks to beat Pittsbugh 24-17 and Louisville 23-20. The Huskies problem is offense and they will probably have to find it to beat Cincinnati, a win they need to become bowl eligible, whereas the offensively-minded Bearcats are 8-3.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -7.70 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Pittsburgh Panthers at South Florida Bulls The Panthers are favored by 6 points.
Our call
: Originally 27-23 for Pittsburgh we go to 27-20 for Pittsburgh to avoid being locked in between the line and the CFPT.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -4.68 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:The Panthers remain a mystery team in 2012, playing superbly against ranked teams but losing games against weaker competition in which they were favored. Pittsburgh needs this win to become bowl eligible

Texas Longhorns at Kansas State Wildcats The Wildcats are favored by 11.5 points.
Our call
: 34-31 for Texas. The Wildcats were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten by an offensive juggernaut called Baylor two weeks ago. Can the K-State defense regain the edge here and win the Big 12 Championship and a BCS bowl game berth?  If Texas wins this game, Oklahoma takes the title.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 11.84 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Kansas Jayhawks at West Virginia Mountaineers The Mountaineers are favored by 20 points.
Our call
: 44-17 for West Virginia. The Jayhawks are 0-8 in league play and 1-10 overall with no wins over FBS teams. A turnaround is unlikely to happen here either.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 19.65 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Nicholls Colonels (1-9) at Oregon State Beavers (8-3).
Our call
: 56-7 for Oregon State.  This game was postponed as the season opener for both teams because of Hurricane Isaac, which accounts for this game being played later at a rather unusual late-season time for this kind of a match. Nicholls is 1-9 for the season and 0-7 in Southland conference play.
Result:

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at Arkansas State Red Wolves
The Red Wolves are favored by 9.5 points.
Our call
: Originally 34-27 for Arkansas State we go to 38-27 for the Red Wolves. The Red Wolves have a six-game winning streak with understandable losses early in the season to Oregon and Nebraska and a surprise loss to Western Kentucky mid-season. Middle Tennessee knocked off Georgia Tech late in September and has four wins in conference play by close margins. Gus Malzahn's offensive juggernaut is beginning to roll for the Red Wolves so we go with Arkansas State for the Sun Belt title.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 9.48 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

LA Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Florida Atlantic Owls (FAU) The Ragin' Cajuns are favored by 9 points.
Our call
: 30-23 for Louisiana Lafayette. Except for blowout losses to Oklahoma State and Arkansas State, and an unexpected loss to North Texas, the Ragin' Cajuns have looked strong this season, nearly defeating Florida, so the improved Owls should ordinarily be no cause for concern, but Carl Pelini's team has been improving weekly, so we exercise caution.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -9.96 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Boise State Broncos at Nevada Wolf Pack The Broncos are favored by 9 points.
Our call
: 31-23 for Boise State.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -9.03 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Alabama Crimson Tide at Georgia Bulldogs The Crimson Tide is favored by 7 points.
Our call
: 27-17 for Alabama.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -6.43 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

New Mexico State Aggies at Texas State Bobcats The Bobcats are favored by 13 points.
Our call
: Originally 31-17 for Texas State we go to 31-16 to keep from being locked in between the line and CFPT. New Mexico State is 1-10 overall and 0-5 in conference, while Texas State is 3-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 14.05 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Florida State Seminoles at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets The Seminoles are favored by 14 points.
Our call
: 38-14 for Florida State.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -14.01 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Wisconsin Badgers The Huskers are favored by 3 points.
Our call
: 31-24 for Nebraska. This game will decide which team has the right to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl Game vs. either Stanford or UCLA. Can they do it again?
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = -4.60 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:

South Alabama Jaguars at Hawaii Warriors The Warriors are favored by 6 points.
Our call
: 38-27 for Hawaii.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 2.54 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result:
