NFL and PSY: Gangnam Style Has Made it to American Football

As reported at the Huffington Post, Gangnam Style has even made NFL Football: see Dolphins' 'Gangnam Style' Dance: Miami Blocks Punt For Olivier Vernon Touchdown vs. Jets (VIDEO)

I post this here because I collaborated with the late Kim Youn-Soo in Germany on numerous publications some years ago. Youn-Soo was a Professor in South Korea whose ancestors came from North Korea, as written in a previous LawPundit posting, so I view with interest developments in Korea:

Korea

Seoul - The LawPundit [owner of Make it Music] has edited and co-edited several books with Korean professors including: Prof. Kie-Taek Kim and Andis Kaulins, ed., The Foreign Policies and Foreign Trade of the German Democratic Republic and the Korean Democratic People's Republic. Kiel, West Germany: German Korea-Studies Group, 1979. The book was published by my good friend Prof. Dr. Youn-Soo Kim, who passed away some years ago, but about whom was recently written:

"In the 1980s the greatest activity in the study of the past and present of the Koryo saram was to be found amongst Western and American-Korean scholars. Kim Youn-Soo, a professor at Kiel University (Germany) and Daegu University (Korea), has published a book compiling his impressions, notes from his travels in the Soviet Union, a historiographical review of Korean ethnology in the former USSR and essays on the history and the culture of the soviet Koreans. His only book about soviet Koreans can only be tentatively included among the annals of scientific research, so it has languished out of the view of domestic and foreign Korean studies. Yet merit for publishing the three anthologies of lyric poetry and short novels including this book must undoubtedly go to Kim Youn-Soo."

College Football Predictions for Week 10 2012 by SportPundit and the Yards Per Play System YPPSYS

Update: CFPT average computer predictions added on Monday.

Below are our predictions for Week 10 of FBS college football play in the 2012 regular season.

ALERT: After a one-week trial, we are returning to 3 points as the standard value we normally use as the home field advantage, and we are again calculating 7 scoreboard points as equivalent to 1 rating point in our system.
We point out also that we take our yards per play stats from cfbstats.com or from the athletic websites of the individual colleges and universities.

In the 9th week five teams fell from the ranks of the unbeaten (Florida, Oregon State, Mississippi State, Rutgers, Ohio), and now only six unbeatens remain in FBS football (Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Louisville).

For the 10th week the undefeated teams have the following matchups: top-ranked Alabama is on the road versus LSU, Oklahoma State is at Kansas State, Oregon is at USC, Pittsburgh is at Notre Dame, Illinois is at Ohio State, and Temple is at Lousville.

Other matchups of note are Nebraska at Michigan State, Mississippi at Georgia, Missouri at Florida, Texas A&M at Mississippi State, Arizona at UCLA, Arizona State at Oregon State, Texas at Texas Tech, Michigan at Minnesota, Oklahoma at Iowa State, San Diego State at Boise State, Penn State at Purdue, Clemson at Duke, TCU at West Virginia, Tulsa at Arkansas, Syracuse at Cincinnati, and Virginia Tech at Miami of Florida.
__________

In making the predictions we use the YPPSYS yards per play system in which 1 rating point on our 2012 College Football Rankings FBS After Week 9 of Play = ca. 7 scoreboard points (just a rough estimate we use) and a home field advantage is normally worth 3 points.

We estimate the score by using the sum of yards per play stats on both teams with a sum of ca. 21.6 (5.4+5.4+5.4+5.4) for both offense and defense (both teams added together) as the average. This corresponds to a ca. average winning score of about 37-16 (we use an odd score for easier calculations, although Massey Ratings last year had 36+ to 16+). Higher total ypp stat sums lead to higher score predictions and lower total ypp stat sums usually lead to lower score predictions.

The lines used this week were originally taken in part already on Sunday from the opening lines at Rivals Yahoo Sports NCAAF Live Odds Pointspreads as powered by OddsShark.com on October 28, 2012,  and later supplemented via the College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT"), October 29, 2012, 12:09 p.m., where we also get the CFPT average spread of the computer systems. These are "moving lines" that can and do change at any time, but we take the line as of a given date and time as given, and later changes in the line as such have no impact on our predictions. We do change our prediction if opening lines later posted for games that currently have no line turn out to have the same spread as we have posted or, if the CFPT boxes us in between the average computer spread and the line, in which case we may change our prediction to get out of being boxed in.

WEEK 10 PREDICTIONS

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Eastern Michigan at Ohio. The Bobcats are favored by 17 points.
Our call
: 38-20 for Ohio. Our rankings and ratings rate the Bobcats at -1.9 rating points and the Eagles at -4.1 rating points, a difference of 2.2 rating points in favor of Ohio. We multiply that rating difference of 2.2 x 7 which gives us 15.4 scoreboard points, rounded to 15, plus the 3-point home field advantage of Ohio makes 18 scoreboard points in favor of the Bobcats. Ohio blew clock management in its last game, failing to go for an easy field goal to tie the game and go into overtime against Miami of Ohio, thus falling from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 16.96 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result: ?? beat ?? 00-00.
SportPundit YPPSYS system calls: We are 0-0 in calling the winner and 0-0 against the line.
SportPundit against the CFPT "average spread": We are 0-0 against the average CFPT spread.

Our call: 31-30 for Miami of Florida. We multiply that rating difference of 0.2  x 7 which gives us 1.4 scoreboard points, minus the 3-point home field advantage of Miami makes 1 to 2 scoreboard points in favor of the Hurricanes.
The College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT") average spread prediction = 2.73 points (if plus this favors the home team, if minus it favors the visitor).
Result: ?? beat ?? 00-00.

SportPundit YPPSYS system calls: We are 0-0 in calling the winner and 0-0 against the line.
SportPundit against the CFPT "average spread": We are 0-0 against the average CFPT spread.

Our call: 24-17 for Michigan. Our rankings and ratings rate the Wolverines at 0.0 rating points and the Golden Gophers at -1.5 rating points, a difference of 1.5 rating points in favor of Michigan. We multiply that rating difference of 1.5  x 7 which gives us 10.5 scoreboard points, minus the 3-point home field advantage of Minnesota makes 7.5 scoreboard points in favor of Michigan. Minnesota is coming off a big win over Purdue while Michigan lost 23-9 to the Huskers in Lincoln and also lost QB Denard Robinson for the second half of that game due to aggravation of an elbow nerve injury, it is rumored, though nothing specific is known for sure. Who will be the Michigan QB in this game? Without Robinson, Michigan will have to play a defensive game.

SportPundit against the CFPT "average spread": We are 0-0 against the average CFPT spread.

Our call: 37-28 for Tennessee. Our rankings and ratings rate the Volunteers at -1.6 rating points and the Trojans at -2.4 rating points, a difference of 0.8 rating points in favor of Tennessee. We multiply that rating difference of 0.8  x 7 which gives us 5.6 scoreboard points, rounded to 6, plus the 3-point home field advantage of Tennessee makes 9 scoreboard points in favor of Rocky Top. Last week Troy lost to Florida Atlantic while Tennessee came close to beating South Carolina. If both teams play similarly here, this game could be a potential mismatch. But in football you just never know.
