Going Bowling in Huskerland

When we "go bowling" in Nebraska, many people often think of football.

But Big Red football is no longer what it once was in Huskerland.
Cornhusker football national championships since Tom Osborne retired are a distant past. It's the coaching, folks.

But there are "other" sports.

How about the recent Husker national championships in women's bowling, what one might call the real "bowling" at the University of Nebraska?

The UofN women's team bowling coach might have some pointers for the Huskers and their football coaching staff.

The best newspaper headlines from the Patriots’ Super Bowl win

Scrapped headlines of early newspaper editions pronouncing Atlanta as the game winner.

We would say in summary,
the game showed tremendous leadership at quarterback,
there was great team effort on both sides of the ball,
and a great job of coaching on the sidelines!

And, hey, Atlanta did pretty well too, you know.
The game did go into overtime.

Well done.
This is sports entertainment at its peak.
Congratulations to both teams for this show!
Thank you!

Stanford University Leads Division I Learfield Directors' Cup Fall Standings 2016-2017

The Division I Learfield Directors’ Cup Fall Standings 2016-2017 have been released.

As written there:

"Reigning champion Stanford maintains the top spot of the final fall Division I Learfield Directors’ Cup standings".

followed by UCLA and North Carolina.

Stanford has won 22 straight Directors' Cups as the leading college and university athletic program in the nation, judged by performance ("Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women's and 10 men's.")

Stanford also extended to 41 years the Cardinal's streak of at least one national championship per year by winning the 2016 men's soccer and women's volleyball titles. Stanford has won more team and individual titles than any other college. Talk about a culture of excellence!

Stanford's athletic record over the years is all the more astounding given the fact that its major competitors have much larger enrollments. Last year Ohio State finished 2nd in the Learfield competition and ranked first in the nation in student enrollment at 63,016, of which 49,435 were undergraduates. By comparison, Stanford had 6,999 undergraduates (14% of the Buckeye total !).

Surely the outstanding Cardinal athletic record is in part attributable to the independence of Stanford's athletic financing. But you also must have great admission "recruitment". Of the 6999 Stanford undergraduates, about 900 were student-athletes, a very high percentage.

The much larger overall enrollment at large state universities is however not matched by a corresponding percentage of such students-athletes, already because NCAA regulations place limits on the financial aid and scholarships that can be offered.

Ohio State, for example, has somewhat over 1000 student-athletes. In other words, in terms of the number of enrolled student-athletes, Stanford probably matches many much larger universities.

We regularly post about Stanford University athletics because of the sometimes controversial rankings of U.S. colleges and universities published by mainstream media, which generally do not factor athletic programs or things like Silicon Valley into their equations. When those are added, it is difficult to beat Stanford.

In fact, the many college applicants wishing to study at Stanford University have made Stanford The Toughest U.S. College to Get Into -- and that for good reason.

Mens sana in corpore sano -- Latin for "a sound mind in a sound body".

We must add, as a Stanford Law School graduate, that we are of course heavily biased, but we chose Stanford over many other superb law schools. Stanford University is simply unique.

Final College Football Post-Bowl Game Ratings & Rankings FBS 2016-2017 by SportPundit

Final College Football Post-Bowl Game Ratings & Rankings FBS 2016-2017 by SportPundit (Updated: National Championship Game included -- the season stats would put Alabama at the top, but the Clemson win against the Crimson Tide was a win in which the Tigers outgained 'Bama convincingly 511 to 376 yards, so we adjusted the schedule difficulty artificially to put Clemson on top. Arguably, or even apparently, in the national championship game, Alabama lacked their season-long offensive coordinator and were poor on offense. Also, the nation's number one defense gave up too many yards.)

These are our final college football rankings for the 2016 season, made after the completion of the bowl games and playoff games, some in 2017. Our system is based on net average yards per play stats, which we calibrate primarily by adjusting for schedule difficulty. Other adjustments can also be made (*=adjustment). We take the cumulative yards per play stat data from cfbstats.com or college and university football athletic pages online, as linked below for each team.

Caveat emptor (Buyer beware): We make this material available in good fun out of interest for the sport of college football. Please do not rely on our material to place bets or wagers of any kind. No one knows the exact outcome of a game or a season before it is played and that is what makes it so interesting. We disclaim any and all liability for the consequences of anyone relying in any way upon our postings, analysis, links or reasoning -- for which we make no warranty of accuracy. May the best team win.

625-245 in picking the winner

Below are our -- SportPundit -- predictions and results for the NCAA Division I FBS College Football Bowl Games to finish the 2016-2017 season. Our predictions are based primarily on our Pre-Bowl College Football Rankings and Ratings for FBS 2016-2017 by SportPundit. We also look at the USA Today Sagarin College Football 2016 Ratings, the Massey Ratings for 2016 NCAA I Football and the Dr. Kambour home field advantage calculations. We compose our schedule using ESPN, NCCA.com and other online sources.

Our system is based -- but not exclusively -- on net average yards per play stats, calibrated primarily by adjusting for schedule difficulty, i.e. the teams thus far played. Other adjustments are also made (*=adjustment) because the ypp system is not perfect, often exacerbating stats made against much weaker or much stronger teams, nor can schedule difficulty always be pinpointed with accuracy since many schedules include FCS teams.

Caveat emptor (Buyer beware): We make this material available in good fun out of interest for the sport of college football. Please do not rely on our material to place bets or wagers of any kind. No one knows the exact outcome of a game or a season before it is played and that is what makes it so interesting. We disclaim any and all liability for the consequences of anyone relying in any way upon our postings, analysis, links or reasoning - for which we make no warranty of accuracy. May the best team win.

For the bowl games we have taken opening lines and over/unders from Oddsshark and VegasInsider.com as well as their opening odds for games where those are posted later. All odds and stats are posted here by us WITHOUT ANY guarantee of accuracy, and without any liability on our part for our posted materials or links to 3rd party sites. We do our predictions for fun. If important for the reader, the reader must consult the original sites.

We write "were favored". The odds of the opening line are usually changed by the time we make our predictions. We do not compete against those changed odds. We use the CFPT prediction average as of the date that we find published.

Please note that some of our total offense and defense stats were already included prior to the Army-Navy game, whereas the majority were included after that game. Please check at cfbstats.com for the most up-to-date stats.

The number in parentheses next to a team name is the team ranking in the SportPundit Pre-Bowl Game Ratings and Rankings.

The Army Navy Game
(we always include this bowl-like game in our bowl predictions)

Army Black Knights (93) vs. Navy Midshipmen (47)
The Midshipmen were favored over the Black Knights by 10 points. The CFPT prediction average favored Navy by 15.87 points. The O/U (over/under) was 55.5 points.
Our Call: 31-24 for Navy. The Army-Navy Game is traditionally difficult to call and this year is typical. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Army 68th Navy 35th; total defense: Army 5th Navy 86th. Army is ranked 2nd in rushing offense and Navy 3rd in rushing offense, but in rushing defense, Army is ranked 19th and Navy 67th. However, Navy has played a much tougher schedule this season.
Result: Army upset Navy 21-17.
We did not get our predictions online on time prior to this game so that this result will not be included in our stats.

Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl
Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia 12:00 P.M. (noon)
North Carolina Central (NC Central) Eagles vs. Grambling State Tigers
NC Central is 9-2 this season, while Grambling State is 11-1.
Our Call: 34-27 for Grambling State.
Result: Grambling won 10-9 after the Eagles had an extra point blocked from 15-yards back due to an excessive celebration penalty in the Celebration Bowl!
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
1-0 in picking the winner, 0-0 against the spread
and 0-0 against the over/under.

Gildan New Mexico Bowl
University Stadium, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2:00 P.M.
New Mexico Lobos (79) vs. UTSA Roadrunners (Texas San Antonio) (105)
The Lobos were favored over the Roadrunners by 7.5 points. The O/U (over/under) was 64 points.
Our Call: 38-27 for New Mexico. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): New Mexico 27th UTSA 97th; total defense: New Mexico 57th UTSA 58th.
Result: The Roadrunners scored with 25 seconds left to reduce their 23-13 deficit to the final score of 23-20, as the Lobos recovered the onside kick.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far

and 0-1 against the over/under.

Las Vegas Bowl Presented by GEICO
Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada 3:30 P.M.
Houston Cougars (24) vs. San Diego State Aztecs (41)
The Cougars were favored over the Aztecs by 3 points. The O/U (over/under) was 60 points.
Our Call: 31-24 for Houston. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Houston 34th San Diego State 63rd; total defense: Houston 14th San Diego State 12th.
Result: It was not an auspicious beginning for new Houston head coach Major Lee Applewhite. One might have thought two different teams were on the field for Houston in this game, as the Cougars led 10-0 early and led 10-6 at halftime. The Aztecs then reeled off 28 unanswered points for a 34-10 win, as the Aztecs Donnell Pumphrey broke the NCAA Division I FBS career rushing record, putting up a new mark of 6405 yards. Ron Dayne of Wisconsin (1996-1999) actually put up more yardage (7125 yards) but NCAA stats prior to 2002 did not include bowl games, so Dayne has only 6397 total rushing yards in the NCAA record book.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
2-1 in picking the winner, 0-2 against the spread
and 1-1 against the over/under.

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl
Cramton Bowl, Montgomery, Alabama 5:30 P.M.
Appalachian State Mountaineers (59) vs. Toledo Rockets (49)
The Rockets were favored over the Mountaineers by 2.5 points. The O/U (over/under) was 56 points.
Our Call: 33-31 for Toledo. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Appalachian State 55th Toledo 4th; total defense: Appalachian State 15th Toledo 55th.
Result: Toledo missed a late field goal attempt as the Mountaineers prevailed by three, 31-28.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
2-2 in picking the winner, 1-2 against the spread
and 2-1 against the over/under.

AutoNation Cure Bowl
Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida 5:30 P.M.
UCF (Central Florida) Knights (69) vs. Arkansas State Red Wolves (82)
The Knights were favored over the Red Wolves by 6.5 points. The O/U (over/under) was 49.5 points.
Our Call: 24-23 for UCF. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): UCF 107th Arkansas State 79th; total defense: UCF 49th Arkansas State 42nd.
Result: The favored Knights lost 31-13 as the Red Wolves defense blocked a punt and forced two turnovers, all of which resulted in Arkansas State TDs. Otherwise, Arkansas State had only 8 first downs against a strong UCF defense.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
2-3 in picking the winner, 2-2 against the spread
and 3-1 against the over/under.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana 9:00 P.M.
Southern Mississippi Eagles (104) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL) Ragin' Cajuns (114)
The Eagles were favored over the Ragin' Cajuns by 2 points. The O/U (over/under) was 57 points.
Our Call: 27-26 for Louisiana Lafayette. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Southern Miss 25th ULL 104th; total defense: Southern Miss 18th ULL 40th. The Eagles have some good stats not matched in the win-loss column. The Ragin' Cajuns recently beat Arkansas State, who we rank 82nd.
Result:The Eagles topped the Ragin' Cajuns 28-21.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
2-4 in picking the winner, 2-3 against the spread
and 4-1 against the over/under.

Miami Beach Bowl

For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far

Boca Raton Bowl
FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, Florida 7:00 P.M.
Memphis Tigers (50) vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (51)
The Hilltoppers were favored over the Tigers by 7 points. The O/U (over/under) was 77 points.
Our Call: 46-44 for Western Kentucky. We rank these teams 50th and 51st. Western Kentucky has won its last seven games, albeit against weak opposition. Memphis has played a much tougher schedule and closed the regular season with a 48-44 win over poll-ranked Houston, but lost in the season 59-30 to Tulsa, a team with a strong offense that we rank 48th. National rank total offense (cfbstats.com): Memphis 33rd Western Kentucky 7th; total defense: Memphis 90th Western Kentucky 37th.
Result: The Western Kentucky offense, even without head coach Jeff Brohm, who has moved to Purdue for the coming season, was too much for Memphis, as the Hilltoppers pulled away steadily to win 51-31.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
4-4 in picking the winner, 2-5 against the spread
and 6-1 against the over/under.

Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California 9:00 P.M.
BYU Cougars (42) vs. Wyoming Cowboys (67)
The Cougars were favored over the Cowboys by 7.5 points. The O/U (over/under) was 59 points.
Our Call: 34-27 for BYU. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): BYU 70th Wyoming 48th; total defense: BYU 32nd Wyoming 112th. Wyoming is weak against teams with a strong offense, which is not the case here.
Result: BYU escaped with a 24-21 win on BYU safety Kai Nacua interception at the Cougars' 11-yard line and 1:22 on the clock, his sixth pick of the year.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
5-4 in picking the winner, 3-5 against the spread

Result: The University of Idaho is located in Moscow, Idaho, and amazingly, is not even directly named after Moscow in Russia, but rather after Moscow, Pennsylvania. See City of Moscow. Moscow, PA, is then allegedly named after Moscow, Russia, but there is no evidence for it. In any case, Idaho upset Colorado State 61-50 in a game in which the score stood 0-0 after the first quarter, and even though the Rams scored 36 points in the 4th quarter as the combined 84 points in the second half broke an all-time bowl record. The red-hot RedHawks won six in a row after starting the season 0-6. It was a first in Division I football history.

Vandy beat Mississippi 38-17 and Tennessee 45-34 to close out the regular season and become bowl eligible. (Tennessee and Mississippi rank 109th and 110th in total defense, which may explain the upsets in part). NC State in turn shocked North Carolina 28-21 in their season finale, also to become bowl eligible. NC State ranks 28th in total defense, so we do not expect a Vanderbilt upset.
Result: The Wolfpack topped Vandy 41-17.
For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we are thus far
10-7 in picking the winner, 8-7-1 against the spread

Hyundai Sun Bowl
Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, Texas 2:00 P.M.
Stanford Cardinal (16) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (21)
The Tar Heels were favored over the Cardinal by 1 points. [Note that the updated line on December 15 favored the Cardinal by 3.5 points.] The O/U (over/under) was 54 points.
Our Call: 30-28 for Stanford. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Stanford 99th North Carolina 44th; total defense: Stanford 36th North Carolina 71st. As a Stanford Law School alumnus, we go with Stanford, but the Cardinal offense this year is far below par and the defense not as good as it has been.
Result: Stanford bent but did not break. North Carolina outgained the Cardinal 398 to 283 yards, but Stanford beat the Tar Heels 25-23 largely on the strength of 4 out 5 field goals by Conrad Ukropina and defense when it needed it most, as the weak Cardinal offense could mostly not get the ball into the end zone. The playcalling appeared atrocious to this observer.

Our Call: 30-28 for Nebraska. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Nebraska 85th Tennessee 50th; total defense: Nebraska 21st Tennessee 109th. The Huskers with their less than average offense can consider themselves lucky to have drawn a team with a defense as weak as the Volunteers, which permitted underdog Vanderbilt to beat the Vols in the final game of the regular season. The Tennessee offense is better than average, while the Cornhuskers have had a good defense against weak opposition, but it was no match e.g. for the 21st-ranked offense of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Tennessee might have the more talented players, but as a Nebraska alum, we call it for the Huskers.
Result: The talent-thin injury-plagued Huskers played valiantly but were soundly beaten by the Vols 38-24, as Tennessee outgained the Cornhuskers 521 to 318 yards. Recruiting? (see that link). If the Big Red win more than 6 games in 2017 we will be surprised.

Result: Florida State edged the Wolverines 33-32.

CFP College Football Playoff
National Championship Game
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida 8:00 P.M.
Alabama (1) vs. Clemson (2)
The Crimson Tide were favored over the Tigers by 6 points. The O/U (over/under) was 52.5 points.
Our Call: 30-23 for Alabama. Out stats suggest about a 53-point game decided by 6 to 7 points in favor of the Crimson Tide. National rank total offense (via cfbstats.com): Alabama 31st Clemson 12th; total defense: Alabama 1st Clemson 8th. Total offense is based on total yards gained, but Clemson ran more offensive plays in 14 games than Alabama did and thus has more total yards, but in terms of yards per play, Alabama leads Clemson on offense with 6.52 yards to 6.28 yards per play. On defense, Alabama leads Clemson with 3.86 yards per play vs. 4.56 yards per play for the Tigers. This season Alabama has averaged 39.4 points on offense, Clemson 39.5 points. Alabama has averaged 11.4 points per game on defense, Clemson 17.1 points.

We wrote in our pre-bowl ratings and rankings that "The current stats of Alabama make it one of the best college football teams of all time, according to our yards per play analysis. It is very likely that Alabama will win the national championship this year."

But what will be the actual final result? Only the game itself can tell us. It should be a good one!

Result: Alabama blew a 24-14 3rd-quarter lead and Clemson scored a touchdown in the last second to win 35-31.

For the 2016/2017 college football bowl games we finished
23-19 in picking the winner, 20-20-1 against the spread
and 24-16-1 against the over/under.

    -----

Both book volumes contain the following basic book description:
"Alice Cunningham Fletcher observed in her 1902 publication in the American Anthropologist
that there is ample evidence that some ancient cultures in Native America, e.g. the Pawnee in Nebraska,
geographically located their villages according to patterns seen in stars of the heavens.
See Alice C. Fletcher, Star Cult Among the Pawnee--A Preliminary Report,
    American Anthropologist, 4, 730-736, 1902.
    Ralph N. Buckstaff wrote:
"These Indians recognized the constellations as we do, also the important stars,
drawing them according to their magnitude.
The groups were placed with a great deal of thought and care and show long study.
    ... They were keen observers....
The Pawnee Indians must have had a knowledge of astronomy comparable to that of the early white men."
See Ralph N. Buckstaff, Stars and Constellations of a Pawnee Sky Map,
    American Anthropologist, Vol. 29, Nr. 2, April-June 1927, pp. 279-285, 1927.
In our book, we take these observations one level further
and show that megalithic sites and petroglyphic rock carving and pictographic rock art in Native America,
together with mounds and earthworks, were made to represent territorial geographic landmarks
placed according to the stars of the sky using the ready map of the starry sky
in the hermetic tradition, "as above, so below".
That mirror image of the heavens on terrestrial land is the "Sky Earth" of Native America,
whose "rock stars" are the real stars of the heavens, "immortalized" by rock art petroglyphs, pictographs,
cave paintings, earthworks and mounds of various kinds (stone, earth, shells) on our Earth.
    These landmarks were placed systematically
in North America, Central America (Meso-America) and South America
and can to a large degree be reconstructed as the Sky Earth of Native America."
