College Football Prediction Results for Week 3 of the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS Season

After a poor prognostication start this Week 3, we came back and finished
55-13 in calling the winner
33-33-2 against the spread, and
31-37 against the over/under.

Our cumulative FBS prognostication record for 2019 after Week 3 is now:
188-37 in calling the winner
107-114-4 against the spread
109-112-4 against the over/under ("total"). 

No ranked teams played each other in Week 3, but there were numerous remarkable events, as reported at ESPN by David M. Hale in Bad penalties, worse coaching decisions and more in weird Week 3.

If possible, we compete against the quoted opening odds ("the line", "the spread") as available online (e.g. Vegas Insider, OddsShark, Sportsline). We do our predictions for fun and are not affiliated with any service or institution. 

The football schedule is drawn using various online portals, including fbschedules.com. Starting this week, our prognostications are once again based primarily on this season's yards per play stats (ypp) via cfbstats.com, schedule difficulty according to Massey Ratings, won-loss records and home field advantage, where we assign a standard 3 points, unless we use Kambour's Ratings. It just depends.

According to cfbstats.com, the mean average FBS ypp on offense thus far this season has been ca. 5.8 yards per play. The mean average FBS ypp on defense thus far this season has been ca. 5.2 yards per play. The difference is accounted for by so many mostly weaker FCS opponents early in the season, which skews the stats. The total mean average ypp is 5.8 plus 5.2 or 11.0 ypp, our standard value --- which reflects an average final score of ca. 38-17, viz. 55 points, which parameters we use to calculate the game scores and over/unders (totals). For example, if the combined ypp stats of matched teams is higher than the total mean average, we assume a higher score calibrated to the difference. If the combined ypp stats of matched teams is lower than the total mean average, we assume a lower score calibrated to the difference.

North Carolina at Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons were favored over the Tar Heels by 2.5 points.
The over/under was 62.5 points.
Our Call: 34-31 for North Carolina. The Tar Heels thus far have played a schedule difficulty (strength of schedule) ranked 22nd in FBS according to the Massey Ratings, while the Demon Deacons' schedule difficulty is thus far ranked 58th in FBS. The ypp stats, via cfbstats.com, offense and defense, are 6.36 ypp and 5.53 ypp for North Carolina and 6.54 and 6.07 for Wake Forest.
Result: Wake Forest topped North Carolina 24-18, outgaining the Tar Heels 436 to 333 yards. The Demon Deacons opened up a 21-0 lead in the 3rd quarter, but the North Carolina comeback surge was not enough to win.

Result: Woah! New head football coach Les Miles put his name on the Jayhawk football program quickly, as Kansas for the first time in nearly 11 years won a road game against a power 5 opponent, downing Boston College 48-24.

The Wash. St. Cougars were favored over the Houston Cougars by 10 points.

Our Call: 52-31 for Washington State. The Washington State schedule difficulty thus far is ranked 123rd in FBS according to the Massey Ratings, while Houston's schedule difficulty is thus far 52nd in FBS. Result:Washington State trailed 14-7 at halftime, but rallied for a 31-24 win as Anthony Gordon completed 36 of 48 passes for 440 yards, 3 TDs, and one pick. It was Gordon's 3rd straight game with over 400 yards passing,

The schedule difficulty for NC State is thus far ranked 119th in FBS according to the Massey Ratings, while West Virginia has faced a strength of schedule thus far ranked 28th in FBS. The Fighting Illini were favored over the Eagles by 10.5 points.

Our Call: 30-23 for the Eagles. Eastern Michigan's schedule difficulty thus far is ranked 33rd in FBS according to the Massey Ratings, while Illinois's strength of schedule is thus far ranked 115th in FBS. The ypp stats, via cfbstats.com, offense and defense, are 5.13 ypp and 5.67 ypp for the Eagles and 5.38 and 3.79 for the Fighting Illini.
Result: Eastern Michigan edged Illinois 34-31 on a 24-yard field goal by Chad Ryland as time expired, offsetting an Illini 4th quarter comeback from a 31-17 deficit.

The Citadel (FCS) at Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets were favored over the Bulldogs by 30.5 points.

Result:The Citadel pulled a major upset in overtime as the FCS Bulldogs prevailed over the Yellow Jackets 27-24 on 320 yards rushing and a game-winning 37-yard field goal by Jacob Godek.

The Buffaloes were favored over the Falcons by 1.5 points.

The Knights were favored over the Cardinal by 7 points.
The over/under was 55.5 points.
Our Call: 41-14 for UCF. Stanford's schedule difficulty thus far is ranked 9th in FBS according to the Massey Ratings, while Central Florida's strength of schedule is thus far ranked 100th in FBS. The ypp stats, via cfbstats.com, offense and defense, are 3.33 ypp and 3.41 ypp for the Cardinal and 7.88 and 2.77 for the Knights. As a Stanford Law School alum, this is a difficult call, but that is what the stats tell us. You can't win many games without an offense, and you are in dire straits if you meet a team powerful on both offense and defense.
Result: UCF topped Stanford 45-27 as the Knights outgained the Cardinal 545 to 349 yards. Central Florida's Dillon Gabriel threw for 347 yards and 4 TDs, while Greg McCrae ran for 109 yards and 1 TD.

The Husker offense has gained 5.40 yards per play, worse than the FBS ypp median average, tied for 85th out of 130 teams. That is disappointing, given that the Nebraska schedule difficulty of teams thus far played is ranked at about average, i.e. 63rd out of 130 FBS teams by Massey Ratings. Unless the Cornhuskers improve miraculously in the course of this season, Big Red fans will have to take a wait and see attitude until next year or beyond.
