College Football Prediction Results for Week 7 of the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS Season

We finished Week 7 of the 2019 FBS college football season as follows:
36-17 in calling the winner
29-23-1 against the spread, and
30-22-1 against the over/under.

Our predictions look to yards per play stats (cfbstats.com) on both offense and defense, schedule difficulty (Massey Ratings) with an eye thrown at the unbiased Colley Matrix, and home field advantage (calculated either via Kambour (Kambour HFA), or as a standard of 3 points, it just depends). We also cast a glance at the College Football Prediction Tracker ("CFPT"). Of course, our own rankings "after Week 6" are a major factor in our prognostications for Week 7. Take a look.

Appalachian State at Louisiana Lafayette
The Ragin' Cajuns were favored over the Mountaineers by 1.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 69.5 points.
Our Call: 35-34 for Appalachian State. Our stats favor Louisiana but the Mountaineers win over North Carolina can not be overlooked.
Result: In a surprisingly low-scoring game that was tied 7-7 at halftime, Appalachian State prevailed 17-7 in a rematch of the last Sun Belt title game.

Syracuse at North Carolina State
The Wolfpack were favored over the Orange by 7 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 56.5 points.
Our Call: 27-26 for Syracuse.
Result: NC State topped Syracuse 16-10, as the Wolfpack defense had 8 sacks.

Louisiana Monroe at Texas State
The Warhawks were favored over the Bobcats by 2 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 62 points.
Our Call: 30-27 for Louisiana Monroe. Our rankings put these two teams at 112th and 113th positions. The Warhawks are stronger on offense, the Bobcats are stronger on defense. Monroe lost 45-44 in overtime to Florida State earlier in the season.
Result: Monroe beat Texas State 24-14.

The Rams were favored over the Lobos by 4.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 68 points.
Our Call: 37-27 for Colorado State. Massey Ratings place these teams at the 117th and 118th positions. Kambour's stats would favor the Rams by four. Our own stats favor Colorado State by more.
Result: Colorado State topped New Mexico 35-21.

Virginia at Miami of Florida
The Hurricanes were favored over the Cavaliers by 2.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 42.5 points.
Our Call: 27-23 for Miami.
Result: Virgnia outgained Miami 326 to 265 yards but lost the game on the scoreboard 17-9.

The Ducks were favored over the Buffaloes by 22 points.

Result: Oregon routed Colorado 45-3 as Justin Herbert threw 2 touchdown passes to extend his nation-leading streak of passing TDs to 34 games straight.

Result: Western Michigan beat Miami of Ohio 38-16.

The Tigers were favored over the Owls by 5 points.

Result: Temple knocked Memphis from the ranks of the unbeaten 30-28.

Michigan at Illinois
The Wolverines were favored over the Illini by 19.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 54.5 points.
Our Call: 38-13 for Michigan.
Result: Michigan led 28-0 and Illinois then scored 25 straight points before the Wolverines recovered to beat the Illini 42-25.

Toledo at Bowling Green
The Rockets were favored over the Falcons by 25 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 65.5 points.
Our Call: 49-17 for Toledo.
Result: Bowling Green upset Toledo 20-7. This most unlikely upset is a sign that winning or losing is in part "all in your head" -- as Falcon football celebrated its 100th-year anniversary and temporarily resurrected its so-called "LT" logo in surprisingly winning style. It is all hard to believe given Bowling Green's football season record up to this game.

South Carolina at Georgia
The Dawgs were favored over the Gamecocks by 24.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 55.5 points.
Our Call: 41-23 for Georgia.
Result: Speaking of upsets, the Gamecocks knocked the Dawgs from the ranks of the unbeaten 20-17 in two overtimes.

Rutgers at Indiana
The Hoosiers were favored over the Scarlet Knights by 24.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 51.5 points.
Our Call: 31-17 for Indiana.
Result: Indiana shut out Rutgers 35-0.

Oklahoma at Texas
The Sooners were favored over the Longhorns by 3.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 75 points.
Our Call: 47-37 for Oklahoma.
Result: Oklahoma remained unbeated by edging Texas 34-27 as Sooner quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 16 of 28 passes for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 1 pick. Hurts also had 17 carries for 131 yards and 1 TD. CeeDee Lamb had 10 receptions for 171 yards and 3 TDs.

The Blue Devils were favored over the Yellow Jackets by 16 points.

Result: Duke beat Georgia Tech 41-23.

The Cardinals were favored over the Eagles by 1.5 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 61 points.

Result: Ball State won 29-23.

Old Dominion at Marshall
The Thundering Herd were favored over the Monarchs by 14 points.
The over/under (predicted total score) was 43.5 points.
Our Call: 31-17 for Marshall.
Result: We predicted this score exactly 31-17, which is a chance rarity, even though our point spread was identical to the line of 14 points. This was a bit unusual, since we otherwise normally change our prediction in order not to duplicate the line. We apparently overlooked it.
